Fall 07: Acceptances/Rejections

I was rejected even by schools I did not apply to.
I have just received the following e-mail from UC-Riverside:
"Dear Applicant,
I am writing to let you know that we did not recommend you for
admission to
our Ph.D. program. We had an exceptionally strong applicant pool this
year.
We hope you have had better success elsewhere, but we will keep your
information on file in case you decide to re-apply for Fall, 2008.
Sincerely,
Paul Hoffman
Department of Philosophy
UC Riverside..."

Again: I did not apply to Riverside...

Wow, weird. Did you even start an application there?

Update:

Master's of Social Work / Social Welfare

University of Michigan - MSW - Accepted with fellowship and grant
University of Chicago - AM - Accepted with 2/3 tuition grant
University of Washington, Seattle - MSW - Waitlisted

I sent in my letter of intent to register and will be in Michigan in the fall :D

Program: PhD CS
Research area of interest: Networks

Accepts (first the good news): GaTech, UNC, UofT

Rejects (now the bad news and a long list): UW-Seattle, Columbia, UCSD, UCSB, UC-Riverside, UCLA

Wait-listed (kept me hanging): UMD-College Park

Waiting (in the limbo): USC <- pretty sure won't go there. Will they send me a refund, if I withdraw my application?

Anyone in the Networking area got into these universities??

WildLion82:
I just started, by including just one or two basic data.

Thanks soccerbud,

I will probably have to broker a RA'ship with a professor, although I dont know yet because I still have 4 @#$%!%@ schools to hear from. Congrats on UCSD, Ive heard San Diego is often referred to as "heaven on earth"

UC San Diego - computer science - masters - accepted
Texas A&M - computer science -masters - invited for a campus visit
Brown - computer science - masters - accepted
**NYU - computer science - masters - accepted
UCI - computer science - Accepted
USC - computer science - masters - rejected
UT Austin - computer science - masters - rejected

So, final tally (MA in history):

BC - accepted
BU - accepted
Tufts - accepted with funding
UMass - accepted, waiting on funding decisions
Pitt - rejected
Georgetown - rejected

Both rejection resulted in very nice, detailed emails from the grad directors, essentially advising me to change a couple things and reapply. Given the number of applicants to each program, I figure a personal email is a good sign. I feel good about this cycle, and I'm pretty happy to have choices. Hooray!

DespSeek,

Congrats on a successful cycle!

What made you decide to apply for an MA before the PhD (I did the same thing a couple of years ago, but I'm always interested as to people's motivations)?

I didn't feel like my app was strong enough to apply straight for the top PhD programs, so I'm using the MA to bolster my chances. In history, the MA is kind of useless unless used to bolster an app or explore further what you want to do, but hopefully it will work for me.

You know whats frustrating , I have April 15th looming up on me and I still have not a peep from 3 colleges. So have many of my friends , all of us have some acceptances but no clue about a LOT of colleges.

Maybe its just a CS/EE thing , but I sure as hell hope it doesnt happen often.

yea, i still havent heard from nyu and bu for cs phd. man, and bu was my backup until a LOR'er recommended i have a lesser backup... yay northeastern. ha. i already accepted an offer though. screw the others.

pinku- nope, not just a CS/EE thing. I have not heard a peep out of half of the schools I applied to, and out of the three that accepted me, I've not gotten the financial aid package out of any of them, and haven't even heard about merit aid from one of the three. Yet several schools (including one that hasn't replied to me yet!) expect an answer by April 15th.

DespSeek,

That makes sense. I was in a similar situation coming out of undergrad, though I also began to waver a bit on my commitment to a PhD, so I did a master's in my minor subject.

I'm glad I did, as the experience not only solidified my desire to do a PhD, but it also made it clear that I would return to my undergraduate major for my doctoral work.

Update:

**MICA - MFA Graphic Design: waitlisted
UW - MFA Visual Communications Design: accepted, w/ funding
CCA - MFA Design: accepted, but no funding as of yet
Pratt - MS Communications Design: waiting
SCAD - MFA Graphic Design: accepted + 10k fellowship
RIT - MFA Graphic Design: waiting

I've been trying multiple methods of contacting Pratt, and they seem like they're having fun jerking me around. It's really lowered my opinion of the school.

@ larationalist:

Trying to find out anything about admissions usually tends to lower opinions!!

Probably barring Duke no admission dept. has ever been prompt or as helpful as I needed them to be.

Well, it's been a busy day...

MICA - MFA Graphic Design: waitlisted
UW - MFA Visual Communications Design: accepted, w/ funding
CCA - MFA Design: accepted, but no funding as of yet
**Pratt - MS Communications Design: accepted, no funding yet
SCAD - MFA Graphic Design: accepted + 10k fellowship
RIT - MFA Graphic Design: waiting

The key is getting ahold of the right person. Once I got high enough up the food chain, and explained how I'd been getting jerked around by secretaries and assistants, and that my decision time was running out, I got an extremely prompt response.

University of Cambridge (MPhil European Literature) (no financial aid)- accepted
University of Reading (UK) (MPhil Philosophy) (no financial aid) - accepted
U.Southern California (PhD Philosophy) - rejected
Cornell (PhD Philosophy) - rejected
MIT (PhD Philosophy) - rejected
WU-St Louis (PhD Philosophy) - rejected
CUNY (PhD Philosophy) - waiting
Johns Hopkins (PhD Philosophy) - rejected
NYU (PhD Philosophy) - rejected
Columbia (PhD Philosophy) - rejected
Georgia State (MA Philosophy) - waiting
London School of Economics (MSc Philosophy of Social Sciences) - accepted

Does UK like me and US dislike me?

update, probably the last unless I get pulled off a waitlist:

MICA - MFA Graphic Design: waitlisted
UW - MFA Visual Communications Design: accepted, w/ funding
CCA - MFA Design: accepted, but no funding as of yet
Pratt - MS Communications Design: accepted, no funding yet
SCAD - MFA Graphic Design: accepted + 10k fellowship
**RIT - MFA Graphic Design: accepted + small scholarship

Here we go.....finally know them all

school - field - program - status:

LSE - International Relations - master's - accepted
Michigan (Ann Arbor) - Public Policy - master's - accepted
American University - Public Policy - master's - accepted
George Washington - Public Policy - master's - accepted
U. of Chicago - Public Policy - master's - accepted

Georgetown - Public Policy - master's - denied

I don't really understand the G-town rejection since I got into LSE and Michigan, but who knows.

I also have a debate on Michigan v. LSE (my top two choices) going now on the message board......please post your opinion.

(i was really surprised to hear from any school this early. weird!)
