Hello all, i plan on transferring out of SUNY New Paltz where i am a freshman.
College GPA: 3.77
SAT:1860
HS GPA. 3.0
Good EC's

I honestly have no clue where to apply or where I would have a chance with my grades. If some of you could recommend some schools i would really appreciate it. I was thinking binghamton and maybe boston u but im not quite sure if i could get in. Please help me out as i have to start the application process soon! thanks!

That gpa is pretty solid, but you’re going to have to provide us with more concrete information for us to offer you suggestions or help in some way. What’s your interests? Do you have a major or different fields of studies in mind? Do you have an image or idea of where you want to be ten years from now? What do you plan to do after you graduate, go into the workforce or go to graduate schools?

possible majors: psychology, history, political science, communications, english, etc?
10 years from now: no clue, hopefully with a job that pays well
most likely will go to graduate school.

Are you interested in staying on the east or west coast? I think, with your interests, you would fit in at UCLA and Berkeley, so I would definitely check those out. But I believe for all UC schools, you need to have 60 transferrable credits, so you have to plan on out your schedule meticulously. What about University of Michigan? I hear mostly all of its programs are solid.

How about University of Wisconsin-Madison. I hear the Social Sciences there are really good, as well. There’s also University of Washington and NYU.

Your college gpa is great, but as you know I’ll say, it’s only for 1 sem, so that will only take you so far since your HS record and test scores were much lower. That doesn’t mean you can’t apply to reach schools, but if you’re intent on transferring next fall, you should apply to a range of schools.

Start by asking your college advisor what safety schools you’re likely to get into next year given your HS and college record. After that, move up in selectivity, picking schools along the way. Use the CB College Search function to find out transfer admission rates for schools that appeal to you (location, size, atmosphere, etc.). Just be sure to keep in mind things like OOS publics, as IS acceptances will skew the numbers. Truthfully, I’m not sure why everybody here is suggesting OOS publics to you, while these are great schools, I’m not sure you’re going to get the most bang for your buck with them compared to many other schools. And many students move off campus after fr or soph year at these schools, which can make being a transfer more difficult socially.

Some thoughts:

The majors you’re looking at are not highly specific/unusual, most colleges will have them, so I don’t think they’re a big limiting factor in selecting schools.

Even though you can afford any school, think about keeping some money for grad school since it is often not fully funded in the humanities; and definitely won’t be if you go to professional school like business or law.

thank you very much entomom, very helpful. in terms of talking to my college advisor, will they know anything about transferring into other schools grade wise? Also should I look into certain looks like Boston U lets say who dont look at SAT scores for transfers?

also when they say minimum number of credits to transfer is 30. does that mean 30 by the time you apply or by the time you enroll. Currently for my first semester i took 15 credits and i will take 15 this semester to have 30 but is that how they they count it for transfers?

Min is the number of credits when you enroll. So you will be asked for a final transcript and if you don’t have enough units because you dropped or didn’t pass courses, you could have your admission rescinded.

Yes, SAT optional schools would be good to look at.
