Fall 2009 USC Transfer

Hi,

I'm a sophomore UNDERGRAD, Mass Media Communications major at NYU, transfering to University of Southern Cali's Annenberg school of Communications in pursuit of my career as a host for a major entertainment channel. NYU's just not the place for entertainment media, whereas USC has majors that actually pertains to my future career. Would anyone care to chance me?

NYU
GPA: 3.5
Total Credits: 62 (after Fall 2008)
Classes: Fulfilled all of USC's requirements except foreign language classes, which I plan to begin at USC

Resume: Founder & Creator of my online blog community, experience in interviewing a wide range of leading experts of today, from A-List celebrities such as Al-Pacino to hiphop lyricist Kanye West to NY governor Spitzer.

-TV host of DMTV (channel 18), appeared on MTVu, VH1, NBC, Blender Mag and radio stations as a guest/co-host. Published article in major Chinese Newspaper about the difference btw Chinese and American teens.

co-author of an Amazon.com kindler's list best seller book

High School Record
unweighted GPA: 3.5
AP's: 6 AP's (4,5,3,3)
SAT's: 1870? 1910?

Resume: Worked at 3 different business companies at the same time to gain conceptual skills, organized English classes to teach orphanage in China, founded a strings quartet group, volunteered at 1 library, 2 different hospitals for 4 summers, won "Pittsburgh Outstanding Young Citizen Award", interned at Pitt, student council secretary, etc......

Didn't get into USC... GPA was a bit bellow average, SAT score

I have 2 concerns:

1) When I first applied to USC as a senior, I did not get in. Is my GPA at NYU good enough now and my EC's strong enough?

2) I plan to take Spring semester off mainly because of economic issues at home. I will have 72 credits by the end of Sophmore fall semester. I'm also working more next semester, taking on more hosting jobs and small roles in shows, etc. Do you think this would jeopardize my chance of getting into usc?

Any advice would be great!!

I think your EC's look great, and your GPA is fine considering you're at NYU. Just make sure it doesn't fall. I'm not familiar with Annenberg's supplemental stuff, but I know it's highly selective.

Taking Spring Semester off might hurt, but it seems like you're filling it in with good work.

But I'm not an expert. I'm a newbie as far as college admissions goes.

Thanks!!

Another reason why I decided to take spring off is because I already have 62 credits after Fall semester soph year, majority of the classes I take in the future won't transfer to USC. I'm in the process of moving to LA, saving up some money :(

I don't think USC takes more than 60 transfer credits either. And your HS stats don't matter anymore.

Other than that, it will prob by a crapshoot, since I hear Annenberg is really tough to get into and your GPA is just below average, but considering your coming from NYU, who knows? Good luck!

thanks!!

i figured majority of the usc transfer students are from community colleges.

I''m looking for a back-up major... would anyone like to make a suggestion?

btw, I'm an Asian female... not sure how that will affect my chances of getting into Annenberg as a broadcast journalism / comm major

put your second choice major as undeclared. That way, you can get admitted to USC with no major and then transfer into the communications school while you're there. It's basically the same thing haha

I think you have to declare your major as a transfer though.

Cali,
Your grades from NYU are good. Here is a freshman profile from the Annenberg School at SC for the incoming fall 2007 class. Keep in mind last year there were more applicants and the GPA averages were higher for the incoming 2008 class, so these statistics are a bit out of date.
For fall 2007 freshman class at Annenberg:
Applicants: 1876
Enrolled: 157
Weighted GPA: 4.10

You are a transfer, but this should give you some indication of entrance difficulty.

Wow! Georgia Girl. That's really selective, but Annenberg is truly a world-class program. To give calichic a realistic picture and maybe a bit more upbeat swing, though, college GPAs are a completely different thing than HS, so 3.5 at NYU is really very good. And USC does have a reputation for being open to great transfer candidates. Of course, I don't have specific info on transfer openings at Annenberg. And that is the biggest question mark. It would be worthwhile, cali, to call the admissions person at Annenberg and inquire about transfer options. How many openings do they project they will have?

Best of luck!

I totally agree with you, madbean. Not many kids have A's in college.. and NYU is about the same league as USC, so I'm assuming that a 3.5 unweighted at NYU (A-/B+ average) is just as competitive as getting a 3.5 at USC. (I've also compared the courses I've taken from NYU to those of USC... many are very similar)

On USC's transfer website, they say the average gpa is 3.7, but a large majority of their students are from local community colleges.

What do you guys think? It's worth a shot?

Of course it is.

Alright so here's the story: I currently go to a four-year out of state college that is not very well known called Capital University. I am now a sophomore and I have been perusing a double major in marketing and music production. I would LOVE to go to USC, it really is the perfect school for me. Heres my info:

GPA: 3.67
Credits: 53 (including this semester)
I can't determine what is transferable or not b/c there is no history with my school

EC: Singer/songwriter, produce people's demos, create websites, in radio club at school, Deans list every semester and honor roll in high school, take vocal lessons, work with people in LA on music, been actively invloved with Huntington Disease Foundation for the last 10 years, go to music bus seminars around the country. High school I did crew, environmental club...but I dont think that stuff matters b/c I will have over 60 credits by the spring

Work: my mom opened a music studio 2 years ago and I have been the assistant the whole way through with marketing, business planning, producing, and teaching. I also interned at a radio station last summer, am a studio singer, and worked at a tanning salon for a year.

Legacy: None

GE: I have a few and am signed up for the rest next semester

This Semester:
Marketing Communications
Production/History of Digital Music
Fundementals of Accounting
Intro to Econ
Principles of Sociology

Last Year:
Business 101:B+
Intro to Marketing: B
Intro to Music Software A-
World Music Lab: A
Audio Recording Techniques: A
Audio Recording Techniques II: A
History of Rock and Roll:A-
Production/history of Analog: B+
Video Editing: A-
English: A-
Global Awareness: A-
Public Speaking A-
Health: B+

So the problem is...I'm not sure what major to apply for! Obviously it looks like I would be best suited for USC's music industry major, but I am starting to get a lot more interested in communications and marketing too (Marshall/Annenberg). Do you think with my background there is any chance I could get into annenberg or marshall and maybe just minor in music industry? Do you think I could even get into the music industry major? It just scares me because my school is very good but its just not well known at all...

In your case, I suggest that you visit USC and have an interview there. Tell USC that you want to tour Annenberg, Marshall, and the music school--speak to reps from those schools.
It is a big decision and since you are half way through your undergrad education, you need to apply to the best fit program. Also, since you did so well in your Public Speaking class, I am sure that you will interview well. You have a great application. Since you are concerned about the prestige of Capital University, I think you will be able to help your application by doing an in-person interview (which would be good for you too in order to find out which is the right program to apply to). Also, did you see if there are any programs for a fifth year masters?

That is a good suggestion, however, I asked them if I could have an interview and they said USC does not offer interviews for transfer students. I have visited the school already and equally like all of them. I guess my question is based on my stats, what are my chances of getting into Annnenberg or Marshall?..since they are known to be so selective.

CV, USC transfer requirements state: "Successful transfer applicants have generally completed a year of rigorous academic courses, including two semesters of English writing and, at minimum, algebra II in high school or intermediate algebra in college. You must complete two semesters of English composition before enrolling at USC."

USC Undergraduate Admission - Transfer Students

In addition, you need to carefully look at any extra requirements needed to transfer into the various schools you are interested in at USC. Annenberg, for instance, lists the following extra requirements:

Transfer Selection

Admission to USC Annenberg is competitive. The quality and rigor of your undergraduate academic course work are primary considerations in our review process. For fall 2008, the average GPA of admitted USC Annenberg transfer applicants was 3.67. However, there is no GPA that guarantees admission.

Annenberg Admission Recommendations

• Satisfy USC’s transfer requirements in English and Math. Refer to the Web site cited above.
• Complete General Education categories 1, 2, 3, and 5 and the Diversity core requirement.

• Complete one semester (or two quarters) of college/university foreign language course work before transferring. If you are fluent in another language, please indicate that language proficiency on your résumé.

• Submit one letter of recommendation from a college/university instructor or academic advisor. Letters from high school teachers or counselors are not accepted.

• Submit a one page Statement of Intent with your application if you are applying to the Journalism or Public Relations majors. This statement is your opportunity to discuss your motivation for pursuing a major in Journalism or Public Relations at USC and to describe your future career goals and aspirations.

• Complete no more than 40 units for the Journalism or Public Relations major and no more than 64 units for the Communication major. Contact your USC admission counselor (refer to the USC Admission Web site to determine the name and contact information) if you have completed 24 units or fewer for admission advice.

Additional Criteria:

The USC Annenberg School admissions committee also considers the following factors:

• Strong writing skills demonstrated in essays and grades in college English Composition courses

• Interest and commitment to major demonstrated by internships, employment, student clubs and organizations, or community service

• Leadership in campus organizations, student government, community service, or clubs

• Employment, family responsibility and other circumstances that may have impacted your
academic performance

• Non-traditional or returning adult students with weaker academic performance in early college experience and strong grades (A’s and B’s) in more recent transferable course work

• Coursework that may be helpful for upper division classes, such as college statistics for
Communication majors

If two semesters of English writing are required of transfer applicants, does it have to be an English Composition class or can it be another english related class? Because all the English Compositions at my current school are filled up...

My guess is that it has to be an English Composition class because there is a required Writing class for freshmen at USC. I suggest you call USC to be sure so that you don't get stuck taking a class which may not fulfill the requirements.
