Fall 2012 Admission Decisions

@ junho8611

I’ll be entering as a freshman with no college credit, but my high school stats are the following:
-3.8 GPA unweighted, no class ranking
-1320/1600 SAT, 30 ACT, SAT II 730 Chem, 650 Bio, 650 World History
-Some random awards and extracurriculars

After high school I worked for a few months then I joined the Air Force and have been in just over 3 years now. I am currently a crew chief and maintain F-15 aircraft. My story is not super exciting haha, but I sure am looking forward to getting out and going back to school!

Congratulations glen, thank you for your service!

Congrats Smazz, glenn, and Wilson!

Side note: @Wilson. An F-15?! Jesus Christ man, what is she like? I’ve always wanted to see one in the flesh

SIde side note: I just got an email for an interview next week! Good sign? Bad sign? I’m literally trembling at my keyboard now as I had already ruled myself out. Any tips or advice? I’d greatly appreciate it!

And for those who were wondering, it definitely isn’t first come, first serve, as they received and processed all my material by February 9th, before Jacqueline and others that I’ve found out have been accepted. So if you were an early bird, don’t lose hope, there’s still a chance!

So, who knows…

Two days ago they told me the first week of May (which I posted here), but I got my call today.

congrats guys… I am starting to get discouraged for some reason. This waiting is killing me. To top it all off I just had my spring break , so all I thought about was all my applications and what not. Never been happier to be back in school!!!

Good luck hiimafrican! I would think a request for an interview is a good sign(indicative of interest). I hope it goes well, and that you are admitted for Fall.

Congratulations mapgirl!

Thanks for your service Wilson 24! And congrats to map girl! Seems like all the veterans are getting in except for me! Haha

hiimafrican! was it for an in-person interview or phone interview?

nyjaime - it’s hard to say. Last year they were having some major issues with computer system upgrades and changes. I received a letter in the mail around May 30th (got my admit call April 19). I honestly don’t recall whether it was updated online first or not.

If it’s a big concern you can call the finaid office and ask when they expect to release it. My understanding is that most students who get a GS scholarship grant get $5k-$8k for the year (half fall, half spring). However this is far from guaranteed or anything, everyone is very very different.

The interviews aren’t conclusive either way. They like you enough, but they probably have some concerns they want to discuss. Are you prepared for a high stress, high demand academic program?

@hiimafrican Congrats on the interview! Oddly what you said kind of makes me feel better knowing i was on the late end of things.

@mapgirl congratulations!

@glen congrats and thank you!

Congratulations to everyone who’s received good news! I am now anxiously awaiting news myself. This site kind of helps with the anxious waiting, but on the other hand it fuels the obsession.

Good luck to you all!

My sentiments exactly. I wonder if this is healthy.
I do anticipate getting back on here later to help other people learn about whichever school I do end up going to.

Thanks Campaigner, hopefully they are generous with the scholarship this year, I have no idea why admitted applicants wouldn’t apply for what appears to be potentially free money? fingers crossed…

Also, I was curious what it was like acclimating to columbia gs, from the classes and housing situation to internship and on campus recruiting/job opportunities if anyone might be able to offer insight into the columbia adjustment

@ Fauves. Thanks! I had the interview today. I feel it went well, but one never knows. Here’s to hoping

@ allday. It was for a phone interview. I think most of their interviews are over the phone

@ afchas. Thanks! No problem. Even if one doesn’t get in, at least one knows he/she has his/her your best and some things just aren’t in our hands

@hiimafrican: Congrats on the interview! Think we can get any insight as to what you guys talked about?

@everyone who’s been admitted so far: congrats.

To everyone who is still waiting: the month isn’t even halfway over, guys.We still have PLENTY of time to hear back. Going through the thread last year people found out they were admitted as late as the 30th. So everyone keep their head up!

Congrats to all who have recently been accepted! I am a senior graduating next month. If you have any questions about classes, professors, work study, etc., just shoot me a PM. Best wishes to those still waiting.

@nyjaime - people forget to fill out forms all the time, or don’t realize the deadlines, or don’t understand the process. It’s very easy, and is free money for most.

Acclimating to GS is pretty tough for everyone. It’s a very intense and different experience. As much as we try to prepare people, you have to experience it to understand. My experience with professors, the administration, etc have all been fairly positive. I know some people haven’t been so lucky.

The best thing to do is try to reach out and soak up as much information as you can. Go to the APS, talk with students there, go to orientation and as many of the extended orientation workshops as possible, connect to your classmates. You’ll need to rely on them to help you.

Good luck and congrats to everyone.

EDIT: And it doesn’t hurt to start perusing bwog and spectator occasionally, and reading the 3 official emails you get every week from the dean of students and the GSSC. Just last week I found out about a perfect $3k + housing research internship on campus that way.

@ Gardito. Thanks! It was jus basic stuff really. He asked about a couple of grades on my transcript (I had an F in Comp 2, but I retook it) and general questions about my past. I think the most stumping question he asked was about my age and what I would bring to the table if accepted as everyone else is significantly older than I am so have had more life experience. Overall I think it went well

Kyle,

Fedex came the other day to your old apartment. The tenants thought it was for them but when they opened it they realized it was for you. I don’t have your mailing address to send it to you. It is an acceptance letter from Columbia University. Office of admissions # 212-854-2772 and there is a website gs.columbia.edu/once-admitted you can probably find some info on that.

I will send you the packet if you send your address

I received this email today. Probably the strangest way ever to find out I was accepted but I won’t complain haha.

Hahaha. That’s awesome, man. Congrats.
