Hello,

Long time follower, first time poster on college confidential. I began studying at the University of Arizona two years ago and completed 16 credits with a 3.4 average. The second semester at UofA, a 0.0 average, I did not drop classes and something came about me. Regardless, I am now studying at a CC in Nj and have completed 40 credits with a ~3.9 average. The schools I am interested in are Rutgers, GWU, Georgetown, Cornell, Columbia, Boston U, and Boston C. I realize that a few of these would be considered "reach" schools regardless of current average due to SATs, which I scored a 1210 (math+reading). If you have taken the time to read this I would value any insight, recommendations, and/or opinions. And for other potential applicants/transfers, cheers and let's make this final push!

Post note:The credits from Arizona are being transferred to the community college I attend and will appear on the official transcript from CC minus the grades. I do understand that the schools to which i apply to may/can ask for an official transcript from UofA.

RECAP:

HS Average ~90
16 credits UofA- 1.6 GPA
40 credits at CC- 3.93 GPA

Thanks,

you will have to send your transcript from arizona. unlikely that you will get into columbia, cornell, and georgetown in my opinion

I agree. You can try and ask Arizona’s school for “academic forgiveness”. They call it that at my college. It wipes your chosen semester’s grades from being calculated into the gpa. Except, you would still need to submit the transcript.

What happened your second semester at the University of Arizona? It seems like you’ve always been a good student other than that. Your SAT scores are a significant weakness, though.

ah, good call bboy. I’ll look into that. Second semester just stopped going to classes and partying took over. Wrong move, moving on from it. Francis- Grades were always ok, didn’t really care about them in high school and even in Arizona, as I thought basketball was going to be my path in life (lol at 5’10). SATs, did not study for them and vocab was a severe weakness.

Any further information/input regarding school choice based on weight of prestige, cost, and future planning would be appreciated. What I mean by future planning is attending law school. The information I have gathered tells me GPA and LSAT scores are the two most important things. Therefor saving money by going to Rutgers seems logical, IF an acceptance to a top 15 law school looms with high grades and lsats.

I thank all of you for taking the time to help a stranger.

I think that even with academic forgiveness, Cornell, Columbia, Georgetown, and possibly BC are still out of reach. You’re competing against students that have similar GPAs (3.9) in four-year institutions without a slew of F’s.

Also, before your bad second semester, your GPA was still not good enough for these schools. You did quite well in CC, but I still think that your first year at UofA will affect your admissions decisions greatly (since it can show how you did at a school these schools may be familiar with).

If there was a legitimate reason for your not doing well second semester, I think that it would be a different scenario.

Also, most of the schools you mentioned, I believe, require that you send all transcripts from previous institutions.

I think you have a shot at Rutgers, GWU, and BU.
