Hello CC,
I applied as a transfer student at the end of November and got a 3.35 GPA (16 credits) for my first semester at a private university in Minnesota (University of St. Thomas, St. Paul). I am thinking about writing an additional statement explaining my high school performance (3.36 GPA) because I feel that I am not qualified. At my current university I am part of several clubs (finance, marketing, accounting) and have been playing Division III tennis since the first week of school. I also worked several hours a week while I was in school too.

Any feedback/information would be very helpful.

I’m not sure I understand your question. Are you saying that you got low scores in HS and first semester in college and you plan to write an additional statement explaining that this was because of your participation in clubs, Div III sports and working?

If so, explanations of low grades are generally acceptable/relevant when it is because of something that is mostly out of your control, eg. health issue, family crisis, etc. All students have demands on them outside of classes, but it’s their responsibility to balance these activities with their academic courses, which are the most important part of college.

Oh no. During my freshman and sophomore years in high school my grades weren’t the best because of family issues that continued until my senior year. Junior year I decided to change and got good grades and senior year on a trimester basis i received a (3.8, 3.65, 4.0). My grades in college weren’t bad just one B-. I am confused and I dont know if I should write about what was going on during high school.

I get it now :).

Since you’re a soph transfer, your HS record will still be important, so it is likely that you should address your HS grades. I would recommend that rather than you writing a statement, you have your HS GC address this on the SSR.
