Fall 2014 Admissions

For those of you who have called Columbia and been given an actual status on your application, such as “It is under review.”

Which number did you actually call? And did you speak to an actual Admissions Officer?

The reason I ask is because, every time I have called the number on their website (212-854-2772), I have been given a very generic answer (such as, “You will receive notice in 4-6 weeks”) from the first person who picks up the phone.

@Stein614‌ anybody?

I’ve always called the admissions line, and yes, they always give me the same answer. I would suggest emailing an admissions offer directly (re)introducing yourself. I’m sure they’ll let you know where your application is in their response.

Where are you coming from @jemendez10? Santa Monica College here.

I have always called the 800 number. I have learned the more specific the question, they have no problem giving a specific answer.

When I called yesterday, I asked, “Is GS on schedule to get ALL Fall Early Action candidates notification by May 1 of acceptance or rejection?” I then said that I have backup schools that I need to notify by May 1 (luckily my MAIN backup needs to be notified by June 1) if I will attend, but obviously want to wait for a response from GS. She basically said that yes, all students will get mail SENT to them by May 1, but obviously WHEN a student receives it is beyond their control. So, being from the opposite side of the country, that gave me SOME hope even with FedEx, if I don’t get a response by May 2. I know it’s a reach school for me, and I probably won’t get in, but the next 2-3 weeks are still going to be looooooooong :((

Congrats to all have been accepted! =D> ^:)^ Good luck to all still waiting with me! :smiley:

Just called GS from the 800 number and it seems that my application has been reviewed and the person I spoke to said my decision will be sent next week!! I am assuming most decisions will be sent about the same time.

@oldtransfergirl‌ thanks for that info. Most of my schools need a decision by May1st so that makes the process a bit easier.

@Stein614 That’s good to know! I remember when I first checked out the Fall 2013 thread, it seemed to be that most people did seem to get decisions the April 2013 week that mirrors next week’s dates.

No prob, @Katie1384!

Every time I call the 212 number, the lady gives me a generic respond like 4-6 weeks. Every time I call the 800 number, a different woman answers the phone and actually goes through my application to find out where my application lies in the admission’s process.

I live like 45 min away (driving) from Columbia so hopefully I get a decision early next week. That would be awesome.

Just wanted to let you guys know that there is no oder when it comes to acceptance or rejection letters. If you go to last years forum you’ll see that people started getting rejections as early as the ones getting their acceptance letters. As someone mentioned here, you can try the financial aid log in to check whether you got in or not. Also you can sign up on FedEx | System Down to get notified once they mail you something. Lets not lose our hope. The deadline is May 1st so lets wait till may 1st. Im pretty sure we are stressed enough as it is so lets not come up with theories to make ourselves more nervous.

By the way last year they extended the deadline from April 15th to May 1st. So lets hope this year we won’t have to deal with any extensions.

I totally agree with h2o and I’m going to try that FedEx thing now

Nothing on FedEx. It seems that most of us will get notification next week…hopefully!!

Called the 1-800 number, asked a direct question, and was told that my application hasn’t been looked at yet. Oh well…

At least some of you are “under review.” Which is good.

@jemendez10‌ when did you apply? Was it ED?

@Katie1384‌ Early Action indeed.

I just can’t with this wait! I just got accepted to UCLA a few hours ago, so I’m feeling a little empowered especially since UCLA is twice as selective as GS. Anyhow, it’s time for April to be over.

I feel ya, @Fiatlux20! I got into UCSD and UCD. The wait is torturous!

Hi everyone - I am in!

I found out a bit unceremoniously, though. I found out I could log in to the financial aid site a few days ago, and the next day I got an email regarding my entrance transfer credit report. As the email stated “Congratulations on your recent acceptance to the School of General Studies at Columbia University!” So anyway, I think something may have been in the mail a few weeks ago, but I live overseas. Also, we don’t get FedEx but stuff usually makes it through eventually. I may call them Monday and ask them to send something to a different address.

In any case, I wouldn’t have said I was a shoe-in, but my application wasn’t sparse. Best of luck to everyone. Has anyone considered making a Facebook page or doing a meet-up? Should we just keep this thread going 'till fall?

Congratulations to those who’ve gotten in! Good luck to those waiting!

Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions, I know I, and some other, current GS students and recent alumni would be happy to respond. Might be better to make a new thread though, so it doesn’t get lost in this one. And y’all know more about where the admissions office is than most of us - although some of the tour guides might know more.

Anyone in west coast get the package?
