Hi,

I just got accepted into Haas and am planning my classes for Fall 2014.
What classes are easiest to take? I've already decided to take Spanish 25 and UGBA 102A with Brooks. But I don't know what other classes to take. I hear that I should take the easier classes junior year and push all the rest to senior year, once I get a job offer. However, all the classes seem to be in the same level of "difficulty". I don't really want to take UGBA 107 because it looks like it's a lot of reading. Also, I'm not sure which Econ class is easier (UGBA 101a, 101b, Econ 100a, 100b, IAS 106, 107, etc.)

Thanks!

For the intermediate economics courses, do you like math?

Math prerequisites:

Economics 101A: Math 53
Economics 101B: Math 1B
Economics 100A: Math 16B
UGBA 101A, 101B: Math 16A, Statistics 21
Economics 100B: Math 16A
Environmental Economics and Policy 100: Math 16A
IA 106, 107: none

If you like math, you will probably like the courses at the top of the list better. If you do not like math, you will probably like the courses at the bottom of the list better.

If I take IA 106 for instance though, and UGBA 103 for example requires UGBA 101A as a prereq…will there be a problem? Also, when I looked at the grade distribution between ugba 101A and IA 106, UGBA 101A had a higher average. Also, I’m hesitant about taking classes with professors I’ve heard nothing about. Any insights? Thanks!

UGBA 103 has a prereq, but you don’t really need the prereq to take class. A lot of people go into the class without taking ugba 101a

No problem with taking IA 106 vs UGBA 101A for the prereq for UGBA 103 - there is no difference. I would go with the above advice on that the prereq is not necessary - the only thing remotely mentioned were indifference curves, which you did not need to know at all for the class… it was just mentioned once.

I would not worry about the readings for UGBA 107… I never did them and honestly, don’t know many who did. I would advise not taking UGBA 103 and 104 at the same time. 102B with either of these is fine. UGBA 105 is not difficult and the readings aren’t “mandatory”. UGBA 106 has some work to it, but you could take it alongside any of the other reqs. UGBA 100 has work depending on which teacher you pick, so this one is really how much you want to learn if you want to do more/less pitches.

Heard UGBA 101A is a bit harder now with the new teacher, but people seem to enjoy him versus the dislike for Kamala. I took the Econ series which I thought was fine, so it’s really up to personal preference. Just keep in mind the units as Econ will not count as business units and will not be counted towards your business GPA.

Either way, the classes aren’t bad and you could take 3-4 prereqs at a time. I took 4 core each semester for my junior year and took my last two this past fall. I’m just taking electives since I decided not to graduate early.

Feel free to message me if you have specific questions on professors or courses.
