Fall 2015 UCLA transfer students

I thought TAP admittance had to do with your first semester community college grades. As my daughter’s CC did not have it, I’m just guessing and may be wrong.

@‌ k4201505

I disagree with selection bias. My friend in the TAP program got in with 3.7x GPA and a B in Calc 1 (among other major pre-reqs.) I without TAP got rejected with a 3.8x and a 4.0 in every major pre-req. This is to biz-econ btw.

@bomerr‌

Just because you can cite a few anecdotes to the contrary, it doesn’t mean that selection bias doesn’t exist. That’s just lazy thinking.

I’ve noticed that you tend to rely very heavily on anecdotes to make generalizations and to come to general conclusions. You should stop doing that; it’s not a persuasive style of argument.

@imaplealot‌

I don’t know how it works at your school, but at mine, one can get in with a good HS GPA or with a good CC GPA if you’ve completed a certain amount of units.

@Cayton
Your last post even said " UCLA itself even states that TAP increases your chances of getting admitted. By exactly how much(If we’re ignoring selection bias), we’ll never know." so I think you are just nit-picking.

@bomerr‌

I don’t know what point you’re trying to make here.

EDIT: I see what you’re trying to say now.

And no, it’s not nitpicking because it doesn’t refute the possibility of selection bias. You’re not really refuting anything with those anecdotes.

@Cayton‌

3 posts ago you said "There’s probably some selection bias going on.

However, I think it’s worth noting that in previous years’ UCLA transfer threads, people with noticeably lower GPAs were getting accepted with TAP"

2 post ago you said “Just because you can cite a few anecdotes to the contrary, it doesn’t mean that selection bias doesn’t exist.”

You changed 100% in your POV.

@bomerr‌

Um, in those two posts, I consistently stated that selection bias is or may be happening. That doesn’t contradict the idea that TAP increases your chances of getting in at UCLA. Hell, in one of the posts you quote, I state that selection bias can be extant even though TAP is helpful.

I’m willing to bet that a lot of people who do TAP also have high GPAs and would’ve gotten in without it(Myself included since my GPA was 3.83 at the time that I was accepted). If you accept the idea that a lot of people who do TAP will have high GPAs, something that @k42101505 claimed earlier and something I agree with, it’s not hard to conclude that a lot of people will get accepted to UCLA and possibly make TAP look more beneficial for one’s admission chances than it actually is. In essence, TAP is helpful, but perhaps not as helpful as some people may believe.

I would like a study on how many OCD ppl get admitted to UCLA and UCB. :smiley:

I think it’s pretty clear, if you can get into TAP, it’s absolutely worth it, but if you can’t, get the highest GPA as you can, and fill in those EC spots as best as possible. I think Cayton has been spot-on the entire time, and I completely understand his bias and think he’s been very objective in his assessment of it.

Hey Lindy, OCD rules! I guarantee it’s my intensity to succeed that gets me into UCLA, period. I will accept nothing less. If I post too much around here, obsessing over the details, so be it. At the end of the day, I’ll be at the University I want to be at because of the wonderful people here who care. :)

All this talk of OCD makes me wish I had it, lol

It’d make me less lazy and force me to do the homework that I’m supposed to be doing and not be on College Confidential all of the time.

Do you guys know when the “official” prompts come out? I have two weeks off now, before Summer classes start and I wanted to use it to write my first personal statement drafts, but I’m not sure if the prompts that are up there now, are the one’s from last cycle, or the new 2015 cycle?

Current prompts in question: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/how-to-apply/personal-statement/index.html</a></p>

Application officially opens Aug 1.

I know the prompt has been unchanged for at least the last 3 cycles. Maybe longer, but I can’t be sure.

http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/how-to-apply/dates-deadlines/index.html</a></p>

Thanks. It would suck to write drafts over the next couple weeks and then they change on me. Hmm.

Even if they change slightly, I’m sure they’ll still be asking things about how you chose your major or what you have or will do. I think if you write it, the worst thing is you may have to tweak it but it’s doubtful it will all be in vain.

I would just wait @fullload.

Yeah, no need to prepare this early for the personal statement, @fullload. It’s important, but not that important.

OK, cool. I’ll wait to be sure. Noticed a couple other guys on here already starting theirs, so I got a little anxious (what’s new). I’ll wait until the prompts are official.

@fullload‌

Are you also applying to Cal?

Ocnative, I might waste $70 on it, just to tell people I turned down Cal for UCLA. ;)

A man with a plan! :smiley:
