When do you plan on taking the test? I thought you had to have submitted an ACT, SAT, or GSAE for your application to be complete?
Guys, does anybody know if they’re sending out decisions tomorrow? I know it’s a Sunday, but it’s also deadline day.
Hi everyone,
I am applying to Columbia GS Spring 2017. It is exciting to see how you guys share your acceptance news. I am happy for all of you who got accepted and I hope all of you who are still waiting will receive good news too. Don’t stress out too much!
Does anyone know what GPA is considered safe? I currently have a 4.0 but seems like this semester I will get two Bs in calculus1 and probably staistics, which will drop my GPA to 3.8. This worries me because I am applying for economics major. Also, I am a little worried that the break I took between high school and college is only one year. Does it make me a less “non-traditinal” student compared to those who were out of school for many years?
@mmi313 I have been accepted for this fall.
My GPA is 3.6 and I don’t even have a break in my education. I apply straight out of college ( I just finished my first degree in January)
I hope it helps your confidence. Good luck !
@mmi313 You have a 4.0 out of how many credits? If you have taken and done well in a lot of other courses, especially in intro to micro/macro, then I don’t think this will hurt your chances too much. However, you will have to take calc I and III, along with an introductory statistics course for econometrics, as an economics major at Columbia, all of which require a solid background in mathematics. The admissions committee will most likely take this into consideration, but I don’t think it will hurt your chances too much.
Regarding your gap year, what you did during this period of time is more important than the actual amount of time spent out of school. Focus on adequately conveying to the committee why you have a gap in your education in your admissions essay.
@Kevin2509 Good to know. Thank you and good luck to you too.
@nickdrake I have a 4.0 out of 39 units. By the end of this semester I will have 54 transfarable units ( I also took some lower math courses that do not count) . I got A’s in economic history of US, microecon, macroecon, intro business, financial and corporate accounting along with other general education courses. I took a year gap when I immigrated to US and studied english for a year before I enrolled at California Community College. Later I got a job at a Mortgage Company and now I study full time and still work for this company.
@mmi313 You’re a strong applicant then. Most are accepted with a 3.7-4.0. Write a good essay about your immigration experience and you should have no problem getting admitted.
aren’t we supposed to get decisions by today as EA?
@Kevin2509 Hi Kevin, I’m from Vietnam too. I did apply to Columbia College at first but they transfer all of my documents to Columbia GS as my wish. I have some questions about financial aid at GS. Could you please help me out?
Cám ơn anh, hy vọng được a hồi âm
@zacle1234 Financial aid at GS is extremely limited. Though there are certainly steps you can take to improve your situation, it ultimately won’t be too pretty. Dean Awn has consistently addressed the lack of financial aid to GS students as “untenable.” It is an unfortunate reality that most GS students have to face when considering attending.
Hello everyone. Like many of you, I am waiting for my response from GS. While checking application status I found a new item on my check list, “Official transcript with spring 2016 grades.” I am trying not to get my hopes us, but this seems like a positive sign. I would not expect them to request those transcripts if it was their intention to deny me. Does anyone have any insight on this addition to the status tracker?
@bjwright37 Yes, you were admitted. That, or they’re going to make their decision after reviewing your spring grades, but it’s most likely the former. Did you apply with a lot of credits/strong GPA? I ask because they would only request spring grades in the absence of these.
@nickdrake I do have a fair amount of credits. I am expecting 50-60 to transfer My GPA has been a bit chaotic, however. From '06-'08 I completed 28 credits at a community college while working full-time. I left there with roughly a 3.0. The following year I transferred to a state college where I did not do well. My grades there were abysmal, as I was dealing with some stuff in my personal life during my time at community college and the university. After leaving school in 2009, I took corrective action to get my life back on track. I returned to school in the summer of 2015. I completed 10 semester credits that summer, 16 in the fall and am currently taking 15 this spring. I have only received 1 B since returning to school, and I have retaken, and earned As in, a couple of courses where I previously did not excel. Also, most of my courses that I bombed at the state college were toward a different major. So, as I said, a bit chaotic, and probably a complex applicant to evaluate. My cumulative GPA has become a complex Calc equation at this point. I believe that I have a fairly respectable professional resume with 10+ year of work history. My letters of recommendation should be very compelling, I hope. And my extracurriculars are decent.
@nickdrake Thinking more about it, they are likely particularly interested in my spring grades because I am applying as an Econ major and I am currently taking Calc 1, Micro and Macro. All of which I will earn a comfortable A in.
@bjwright37 Well, in either case then you’re in great shape. You were most likely admitted and they’re just requesting them now as a formality–can’t say this with certainty, though. I was accepted March 1st and still need to send my spring grades as well.
@nickdrake I hope so! The anticipation is killing me. Thanks for the insight, and congrats on your acceptance! Are you enrolling?
I’ve been waiting since January for a response and just today I got an email telling me about an interview. I am quite anxious after receiving the email. Does anyone have anyone tips for the interview ?
@zacle1234 Hi there, which question do you have for me ?
Financial aid for international students is around 7k to 10k. So it’s limited and we have to finance most of our study by ourselves.
Hope it helps!
Just a note for folks still waiting. All (early action) decisions will be sent out by today, via email.
Do you know around what time?
