@roxanne125 out of curiosity, what were your CSULB courses? Generally, unless they’re off the grid, they transfer over. They didn’t accept any?
Oh I see…thank you!
Yes, Eng 50 is non-transferable, the reason I take it after I got an A in ESL is that the professor advised me to take it before Eng 100. In my CC, there are ENG 10 and ENG 50.
Hey future Bruins!
Intended Major: Psychology
IGETC: Done except for the language requirement. I’m debating whether to just take introductory Spanish rather than send in my high school transcripts.
Major Prereqs: Will be done by the end of Spring '16.
Units by Fall 2016: 90 (I’m a double major, so the credit excess is because of that)
GPA: 3.81
Major GPA: 4.0
EC’s: President of Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society, member of the school’s honors program, member (and possibly soon-to-be-president) of Phi Theta Kappa, student ambassador, and have volunteered in the past with the county library. Honestly, I think I should be doing more, but I have no idea as to what.
Is UCLA everyone’s first choice or is it a backup for some of you?
@aepaige You should be fine. You could add another club if you’d like, but it really isn’t necessary. Do you have the Calc situation sorted out?
Regarding the language requirement: did you not have two years of a language in HS with a C- or better? Make sure to complete the requirement either way. I know that, without IGETC, one must complete the second semester of a FL - I forget if IGETC allows for just the first semester. I’m pretty sure it does.
What’s your other major?
@goldencub My other major is biology, but I would rather minor in that than major in it. Originally, I had intended to enter UCLA as a psychobiology major, but I’m not a huge fan of physics, which was a large part of the pre-reqs.
Which Calc situation are you referring to? The one mentioned in another thread? Thankfully both UCB and UCLA (which are my first and second choices) accept my Statistics for Behavioral Sciences class as a substitution for calculus. I’m still failing to understand why a psych major would need calculus in the first place, but maybe I’m missing something.
With the language thing: I’m what one would refer to as a non-traditional student. I’ve been out of high school for eight years and can’t remember whether or not I passed two years of Spanish. I know I took them, but not if I passed Spanish 2. I would rather not take the FL in college, but I thiiink I got a D when I was a junior in HS nine years ago, lol.
@aepaige Ah, that makes sense. Good luck!
@goldencub Thank you! Same to you!
So I posted in the berkeley transfer thread and though I may as well here too… I’m thinking of trying to get in where my husband does. Here’s my info.
Major: Gender/womens studies
Gpa: 3.64
IGETC: will be completed in the spring
ECs: full time work, 2 hours volunteering at elementary school a week.
Other info: first generation college student, three dependants, transferring from a cc.
@sugarbabies3 I think UCLA cares more about GPA than anything else. Unlike Berkeley’s holistic approach to admissions, UCLA is about numbers. I went to their annual STOMP conference for transfers and listened to a presentation by the admissions coordinator saying that they look only at your UC transcript. Anything that doesn’t fit into your major, they cross out as if it had never existed. They made it sound like getting accepted to their school was easy as pie. I certainly hope so. If UCB doesn’t work out, UCLA is next on my list.
Interesting @aepaige I’ve also heard similar things about how they each look at applicants. Cal I’d definitely motivated by personal statements from applicants. I’ve got a couple different options I’m thinking. I’ll aim for Cal or UCLA and if I don’t make it, my back ups a csu and I’ll work on going into nursing. But I would really like the degree in gender/womens studies first before pursuing nursing. It really Interests me and I think there’s a lot of value in it from a social aspect.
@sugarbabies3 The personal statement for UCB is a lot more valuable than at the other UCs, I’m assuming. And I like your plan. I think having a gender studies degree under your belt before entering nursing is a good idea. It gives you a perspective that many others might not have. However, I would suggest minoring in something that will help you out in terms of nursing while in university. Possibly biology, anatomy, or physiology.
@aepaige I’ve thought about that but I’m not sure how likely it is that I could do it since my major would be a social science, but bio would be a different department. I could just take the courses like A&P for my nursing pre-requisites but I think I may rather take them at a ccc afterwards. Especially because of the competitiveness of those pre-med weeder classes lol
I would think the PS is equally important at UCLA.
Major questions guys. Let say I get admitted to UCLA. Once I get there could I switch majors if I have the pre-reqs for both?
@Panorama14, depends, what are you trying to switch into?
Impacted majors (Psych, Comm, BizEcon, etc) have VERY strict no-switching policies.
Usually at most UCs you can switch between two L&S majors, as long as the target major is not selective, as luckie said. Switching into another college (different from your current college) is a lot harder and may or may not be doable. You need to talk with the dept.
–> As I recall, UCLA is workable if it’s humanities or social sciences and pre-reqs met. STEM and Arts, not too easy.
Hi guys! It’s my first time posting on this forums page and would like to know my chances:
Intended Major: Physics
IGETC: Done by Spring 2016
Major Prereqs: Done By Fall 2015
GPA: 3.31 (Hopefully 3.45 by the end of Fall 2015)
Major GPA: ~3.5
EC’s: Math Tutor. Physics Club. Honors Research.
Honors/Scholars Program to UCLA: Done by Spring
Here’s some context: GPA Trend From Summer: 3.0 -> 3.35 -> 3.0 -> 3.72 -> 4.0 (Projected)
I’ve taken 20 semester unit every semester except my first summer in college, where I only took 6. So by the end of Fall I’ll have 87 semester units done. I know this school’s probably a reach, but I’d like to know my chances. Thanks
@nidalee Honestly, your chances are slim. Average GPA admitted is a 3.72, average GPA enrolled is a 3.62 at UCLA (Fall 2014: https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof14_mjr.htm)
MAKE SURE TO TAG SOMEWHERE - you still have a slight shot at UCLA, if you bring your GPA up! Even so, it is unlikely. Definitely apply to other campuses and submit at TAG at one UC. The deadline for TAG is September 30th, so make sure to do it ASAP.
They don’t consider Spring 2016 GPA in the Admissions process.
@luckie1367 @lindyk8 I would like to switch from an English major to a communications major. I have the pre-reqs for both but I understand that it is much easier to get accepted into UCLA as a English major than comm. That is why I am applying as an English major hoping I could switch once I arrive. If this is not possible, I do not mind majoring in English and minoring in communications.
