Which major do I have a better chance at? I don’t have the best GPA though.
Anyone know around what time of the year they usually put up the admissions statistics breakdown for the previous year? I seem to remember the 2014 transfer stats up around this time last year?
@sutt123 How was your transfer day experience? I was completely underwhelmed. I went to STOMP last year and liked the school (even though they opened with a weird talent show), but this time around they kept pushing the fact that you’ll see celebrities all the time and it felt like no one was giving me information I couldn’t find online. Hi everyone, I was admitted to UCLA in April as a transfer and going here now. I’m Here to answer any questions you may have
Admitted fall 2015
GPA: 3.37
Major: Cognitive Science ( switched to psychology)
TAP: Yes (crucial to my admission, cognitive science was my alternate major!)
EC: couple clubs and AGS honor society
Admitted: every UC except Berkeley
@naregian Chemistry Club Officer, Med health club, a summer research internship, and AGS honor society member.
For transfer students they don’t look at ECs and personal statement as much. They do help for more impacted majors, but concentrate on gpa and getting prereqs for major done. And do TAP if you can.
@girlpower1 If the majors are in the same dept, it’s usually doable - switching into a selective - assuming major pre-reqs are complete. No one can guarantee, of course. But it seems like it happens a fair amount.
@GirlPower1 I was surprised to. When I went to orientation, they told us if we wanted to switch to psych we could. That was only if you had all the prereqs done, and were admitted as cognitive science or psychobiology. And the counselor told me that it was the last quarter they were letting people do that, and they rarely do this.
@Salmanthgr8 the exact same thing happened last year to a guy who got into biz Econ at UCLA. Is that the one that’s easier than Econ to get in to? Anyhow, during orientation they told him the same thing. He could switch to the more impacted one if he wished because he had his pre-reqs done. He was commenting on it up here because he was so shocked.
Chance me!
Psych major, also want to minor in neuroscience
3.8 overall gpa (Not doing well in chem, so it’ll likely drop to 3.75)
3.57 Major gpa… I’ve only taken stats and philosphy, im currently taking chem and psych, will take bio next semester
Will finish TAP next semester
Ec- Worked two jobs in the summer, currently only working 1 20 hours a week.
I also shadow a UCLA neurosurgeon (Hope this helps)
I just finished a year of psychothreapy due to an abusive past with my father, so I hope to somehow include this in my personal statement
Hey everyone. Can you guys go through the differences of studying English and American Literature/Culture at UCLA. What are some benefits and downfalls for both? Thank you!
@Salmanthgr8 Okay cool thanks! I saw that you got accpeted to cognitive science as your alternate major. I would like to do that as my alternate, but I haven’t completed many pre reqs for it. Did you do them all? And what was your first choice major?
@dinosaur33 My first choice major was actually psychobiology, but I was missing o-chem and my gpa was pretty low, which is why I got rejected from that major. I only had 5 cognitive science prereqs completed and I got in. I still had to do the computer science courses and Psych 85, which I didn’t want to do so I switched majors. Psych worked better for me because I can do the major as well as complete the requirements for med school, and if I did that with a cognitive science major I would’ve gone over on my unit limit.
Cognitive science is a good alternate major for you, just complete as many prereqs as you can, make sure you talk about all that stuff on your application like you working a job, shadowing neurosurgeon, etc. I think your application is solid
@Panorama14 I’m currently a gender studies major at UCLA, but several of my friends are in English or Am lit & culture. The required preparatory courses are the same for both majors, however, the american lit & culture major has a more narrow and defined focus. In English, there’s more of a focus on breadth in the discipline. For instance, there are 4 historical and 3 topical breadth course requirements. Am lit & culture has far fewer applicants (26 out of 39 were admitted in 2014, compared to 231 of 595 for English) and has an average admitted GPA of a 3.38. I also know of two people who switched into english from ALC after transfer. I, personally, would love to do american lit & culture.
@starkali nice! Thank you for your insight. To be honest with you I was thinking about applying as a ALC major because the average admit gpa rate is far lower than English(3.70). And as you stated they require the same classes. With a 3.7gpa and a 4.0 in the pre-req classes, I was thinking I would have a much better chance of being accepted as a ALC major.
Is anyone interested in reading each other’s personal statements? I just finished writing the rough drafts of both of mine (feels weird to do it this late since in high school I had them done by July)
