@goldencub Thanks, I am speaking to a counselor just in case
@kamiture I see, but I wouldnt be able to do this class in the summer honestly. I couldnt do pre calc last summer too well(I wouldve gotten a C probably), and now I cant even pass calc in winter; no way I could do calc 2 in summer. Hopefully I would be allowed to do it once accepted or worst case some schools, such as UCI, did spring admins last year
Hey all, I’m a current student at a community college in Los Angeles.
I’m hoping to transfer to UCLA or UC Berkeley and I’m going to apply this coming fall.
But there are things about me in order to determine my chances of admitting into UCLA or UC Berkeley
I’m an older student that returned to school to study really hard, I stopped going to school for about 5 years before I returned in 2014 Fall.
Before stop going to school I worked full time or two jobs and attended school part time.(24 units in 4 years)
I grew up from a dirt poor family and I worked to provide myself with pocket cash, help my family financially and to be a financially independent student.
I was an art major before but now I’m a business major and I never took major classes in STEM or English.
Before I left school my GPA was at 2.4
After I came back, my semester GPA has been 3.7 to 3.8 range per semester and I had a 4.0 past semester, working 30 hours a week.
My overall GPA at my school including long time ago units is 3.32, UC GPA of 3.24. But since I’ve returned as I said, my GPA has been 3.7 to 3.8 range.
I live by myself, I’m 28 and I work at a restaurant waiting tables as a server. I hate retail job and because I feel like I’m not as educated, incompetent I study my heart out and if I don’t get an A in an exam I get really upset.
Right now I’m taking precalculus and I have a B average in my course and I’m mad as hell. I still work so it bothers me specially in the winter. I understand the material, I know how to derive theorems but math is just like performing at a concert or at a sports match. I need to practice and review everyday in order to perform better. I’m trying to find co-workers to cover me and work and I’ll put in more time to solidify.
Although I only work two days out of the week part time during weekdays(but work 10 hours a day on friday saturdays and 5+ hours until late sunday night) it feels like I just don’t have enough time or I’m too tired to focus to produce quality studying hours to prepare for my exam
Anyways, here are list of classes I’ve taken and here are the grades.

I don’t smoke, I don’t like drinking, I rarely take vacations I don’t chase skirts much.
People think I’m boring and too serious about life but I work too hard to be spending money on anything other than investing into my future and education specially when I’m at 28 years of age juggling school and work, with no professional career and degree.
I got B’s here and there but I’ll do my best to not slip.
Some were easy classes that I’ve gotten B’s in. I just got lazy. Microeconomics, I slipped in a crucial exam so that I can’t do anything about.
Precalculus… I should work less for that >:|
I know Haas is really really really hard to get into but I talk to Berkeley representative at my school and she says although 5.6% who applied get in, more than 40% of them didn’t even qualify to apply.(They were missing some of the pre req and didn’t know about it etc)
She also advised that I would have a better chance applying as Econ major which I don’t mind but if I’m doing Econ when UCLA doesn’t offer Business administration, I can apply for Biz Econ for UCLA although you need 3.9 GPA to get in.
I don’t know.
Do I have any chance?
I don’t struggle with math I love math although I’ve not taken math for the past 10 years and those intermediate algebra and geometry classes were my first since high school.
Is anyone else freaked out by the Fall 2015 profile for Psychology? 75th percentile has 3.95, the avg GPA was only 3.83 last year
@brick0319 For UCLA and Berk, I think you have ehhh chances. They’re really looking for nothing short of perfection. They won’t hold your age against you, if you’re worried about that, but they do look heavily at GPA. Then again, they are holistic–so they’ll take your circumstances into account. But again, if you ask me, I think you should DEFINITELY apply, but I wouldn’t put my money on your stats helping you too much.
Also, without those who are ineligible for Haas, acceptance rate is still below 20% (~15%).
@hellwasfull I know I freaked out to when I saw that but that’s not the actual average… That means 75% of people admitted had a 3.95 or lower. The average would be closer to adding the 3.95 to the 25th percentile (which is 3.73) then dividing it by 2. This would mean the median is 3.84 which is more or less similar to an average. So it really didn’t go up that much. Hope this lessens your worries lol
@UCLAhopeful922 I know I calculated that too yesterday, but I have a 3.87, so im a little above average and idk about my chances
I’m sure you’ll be fine @hellwasfull! Don’t forget, that means half the people that got admitted were below the average, and you’re above it!
Is UCLA that much harder than CC?
I know it’s going to be harder…but how much harder could it actually be?
Would taking 20 units a semester at CC prepare me for the rigors of UCLA?
@brick0319 You’re really motivated
Question about the Transfer Application Update.
I already updated the TAU on my UC app but I just switched my sociology class and dropped my other one. SO is there anyway I can update the TAU? I can’t seem to find where I can update my spring schedule after already submitting the TAU
You have until the deadline to make changes to the TAU. Just log back in and change it.
@solostish
UCLA is harder than CC. That is mostly because you’re going from taking basic lower division courses to taking more in depth upper division ones. If you performed well enough at CC to be accepted to UCLA, then you will be fine.
The major differences that I encountered were a significant increase in the amount of reading, and the higher expectations from the professor about your ability to write analytic papers. In CCC I could write just about anything for a paper with minimal effort and get an A. At UCLA the professor/ TA will tear your paper apart if it lacks solid research and higher analytics.
If you are willing to put forth a strong effort and time, you can get A’s at UCLA. I ended UCLA with about a 3.5. I had a mix of A’s and B’s and I worked hard, but my B’s reflect times when I didn’t put in as much time or effort as I could have. It was a choice based on what I had going on at that time. Show up to lectures and Discussions, and be engaged. That’s half the battle. People who really do poorly, often don’t bother to show up.
Hey guys, long time reader first time poster. i was wondering, does UCLA considers winter grades as part of GPA when reviewing a application? I know the Update deadline is January 31 but what if i go back after that and put in my winter grades. Will they be considered or just be ignored?
Sorry about my grammar im on my phone :-S
@jessus They may be considered in your application, but they will not be calculated in the GPA that they consider.
@2016Candles Out of curiosity, how many classes did you take per quarter?
@goldencub i go to SMC. I took 14 units (4 classes) during fall and 6 units (two classes) during this winter. i take about 4 transferable classes per semester. I had to take alot of extra classes cause i placed in remedial math :-L and had to make up the units i lost.
@goldencub my gpa is currently 3.41 and i am a philosophy major. I was looking at the ucla profile for last year and the 25th precentile is 3.41. I’m worried and hopeful at the same time. I have all my major requirements done and will be igetc certified but i doubt ill get in. :(( :((
@goldencub I took 4 classes/ quarter. I carried between 16-18 units/ quarter.
