Hi everyone, I have been lurking in these forums for a couple of weeks while anxiously awaiting the admission decision, which finally came in yesterday (accepted!), so I wanted to share my stats. Like many of you, I read forum after forum of previous years and felt like I didn’t have a chance of getting in so I wanted share this with everyone. I am currently enrolled at a local cc and have 30 credits with a 3.64 GPA. I also have 45 credits from a previous university at a 3.65 GPA. I am a PTK honor society member as well as Golden Key and work full time. Although the other forums made it seem like only the students with 3.9 and 4.0 got accepted, that is not true. The admission committee really does look at your application holistically. I had great letters of recommendation and a really good essay and was passionate about wanting to attend. My GPA was also a reflection of the type of classes I was taking (I took all AP and upper division courses) which I think helped substitute my GPA. So if you are passionate about wanting to go and make good relationships with your teachers, you can get into an ivy league. The admissions committee is looking for passion and commitment and hard work, not just a GPA. Good luck to all of you waiting to hear back, I know how nerve wrecking it is, but hang in there!!
Thanks for the pep talk! Now if everyone else can post their stats…
My posts keep getting delayed. I was accepted on March 1st after the red x appeared on my page.
I did horribly in high school due to health complications. I wrote about how I found inspiration to pursue a career in medicine because of my experiences as a patient. I got a 3.9 in 50 units at a community college and worked in a hospital.
Hey all,
Just got accepted today! I had applied before the Jan. 15th deadline but my admissions decision was delayed a week for a certain reason. I wanted to share my stats and story because everyone who had posted theirs before me had helped me gain a better understanding of how the process works and who has a chance at getting in. It would only be fair to give back to this community.
My Story:
Attended a 4 yr public state university after high school and did really, really bad. .27 Cumulative GPA over 2 semester’s.
Left school for a few years and then attempted to get back on track at a community college. Once again, did very poorly so I stopped attending altogether (1 C and a few F’s and W’s). Then a few things happened in my life that forced me to reassess who I was and where I wanted to go in life. Returned to the same community college and performed very well. 1 C the first semester back (Drawing), 1 B, and then 16 A’s in a row. However, last summer, I had a personal issue come up which caused me to finish a stats course with a D. I am currently taking the same stats course now and am expecting to finish with an A.
Stats:
.27 GPA, 19 Credits (1st school, 4 yr)
3.74 GPA, 58 Credits (community college, brought down by 2 C’s as explained in my story and 1 B)
Major: Philosophy
Essay: Wrote strongly about how philosophy changed my life and renewed my love for learning
Good luck to everyone in the future!
Grats! If you don’t mind (and I understand this can get quite personal), I have a few questions.
A lot of people who get into GS come from a military background or have some professional experience. How did you spend your time away from school? Also, did you participate in any major extracurriculars (including work) while at community college? Also, will that be 58 credits when you matriculate or did you already have 58 when you applied?
I ask because personally, I did not have a particularly productive time of absence myself. I sorted things out personally, not unlike you, so I acknowledge how important time away from stress can be, but I am worried that my application would not look particularly impressive. Even now I haven’t really participated in too many ECs. However, I do have similarly great stats (particularly relying a lot on a great SAT), and hopefully a resonating story. I’m a lot younger than I expect most applicants to be (18), and I’m not sure whether that’ll work for or against me. So since your app looks like it’d have been quite similar to what mine will be, I appreciate any insight you can provide.
Hey, no worries.
My time away was spent very unproductively. I was loitering about doing nothing/stupid stuff for many years and I was also diagnosed with a few physical illnesses which brought me down to rock bottom. A couple of major personal turning points also happened in my life during this time. I talked about how I overcame these issues using philosophy, especially ethics, and how that caused me to take my academic and life path seriously. As far as e.c.'s go, I help my widowed mother run her physically demanding business while attending school but nothing else really. And I had 58 credits when I applied, should be ending with about 69 or so.
