FALL 2017 UCLA OFFICIAL TRANSFER THREAD

@calmrod11235 http://www.admission.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/tradms.htm

It is imperative that you complete the two English courses by the Spring semester, not afterwards.

@Happy2Help Thanks for the help! For some reason it cut off the 2. I meant to say I wouldn’t be able to finish English 2 which is required for the igetc but I have finished both English 1A and English 1B at my school.

@calmrod11235
Hm, maybe you should look at other college. Do they allow you to skip over that?
I mean, 3 English courses just for IGETC English? It sounds a bit rigorous.

@calmrod11235
According to the IGETC requirements for English communication:
one course in English composition and one course in critical thinking/English composition.
So you’re saying that the English 1B course you took does not satisfy the “one course in critical thinking” requirement? If it doesn’t why can’t you take the required course Spring of 2017, before we transfer?

It sounds like @calmrod11235 is talking about IGETC Area 3 guys.

I thought it was only two requirements for english!? English composition and critical thinking, correct? If not, I’m gonna start freaking out :-t

@calmrod11235 Also, nice GPA! I think you have a good shot as long as you have IGETC Area 1 completed by the spring before you transfer. Better get someone else to confirm how lack of IGETC 3/4 affects impacted majors though.

@LynAmmo UC transfers only need two English classes don’t worry; I confirmed that with a counselor at my college.

@LynAmmo Don’t worry :smiley: It is only English composition and Critical Thinking. If you took two, you are done with the requirement!

Haha kk (: Thanks guys! Saved me from yelling and crying to my counselor, now I’m excited for this process again B-)

@calmrod11235 Yeah, that GPA is really, really good( it’s almost a guaranteed admission)! You might want to check the English again, because how like how most of us mentioned, it’s only 2. If it’s like 1A + 1B in order to make 1 full English course, then it’s not worth it (since the time is your constrain).

One more question. We only have to take one language course right? In th IGETC it says, “Proficiency equivalent to two years of high school study in the same language.” So if I took Spanish 1, Area 6 on the IGETC would be complete? Or would I need to take Spanish 1 and Spanish 2?

@LynAmmo I took Spanish 101 and 102 to fulfill the language requirement for Igetc. I’m very positive you need two language courses. Ex. French 101 and 102, German 101 and 102.

@Ciceroo Damn it :(( It’s a good thing I asked before it was too late… My counselors suck -_____-

@LynAmmo You would have to have taken both Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 in high shool in order to complete the foreign language proficiency requirement. If you did, you no longer need to do two courses of foreign language in community college. This is up to date with the current IGETC.

@LynAmmo Wait, before taking Spanish 2, look at your IGETC document.
Your school should have a IGETC document just like this
http://www.lacitycollege.edu/services/counsel/forms/IGETC%2014-15%20FINAL.pdf

It’ll give you which courses will fulfill the requirement.
“choosing one of the following courses at a level 2 or higher” is our LACC requirement.
If your school says Spanish 1 will fulfill it, then you don’t have to take Spanish 2.
It is just 1 semester, but you need to check if the course actually fulfills it. It should be listed on the page :smiley:

There are two main ways that people can fulfill this portion.

  1. 2 years of Foreign Language
  2. One semester of foreign language (usually 2nd level)
    I did 2 years of Spanish while in High school. Most fun and interesting class.
    So that fulfills it.

@laccstudent Well the igetc isn’t even required for most engineering majors, and it says on Assist that applicants are not required to complete the HSSEAS General Education Requirements in order to be admitted for the computer science and engineering major. For this reason I figured taking English 2 (argumentative writing) was not beneficial nor a priority since I had already taken English literature. But thanks man! I’ve worked hard my first year at community college I’d like to think.

@jackbane I’m pretty sure the IGETC specifically requires the completion of English 2 (argumentative writing); however, I do not have to finish the IGETC in the first place since its not required for my major. I can’t take English 2 now since I don’t really have the time in my schedule to finish it by Spring.

@mightyMETA Hey I looked at your GPA too and yours isn’t too bad either :slight_smile: What is the IGETC area 1? I’m pretty confused now since I thought the IGETC wasn’t even required for engineering haha.

Can anyone clarify on anything regarding the IGETC/English 2 (argumentative writing) for engineering majors at UCLA? Thanks for your responses guys! I appreciate it.

@calmrod11235
HSSEAS, this is their official statement:
“Two transferable courses in English composition are required.”
http://www.admission.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/seasmajs.htm

To clear the confusion:
It’s true that Engineering majors do not have to complete IGETC, however, two transferable English courses are required. And also, two more courses are required as well.

The list is:
-Two English courses
-One Humanities/Social-science course
-One Bio/Life science course

There’s actually 4 courses :confused:

@calmrod11235 Thanks xD Here’s a link to the IGETC form for my college:
http://www.piercecollege.edu/offices/transfer_center/docs/2015-2016%20IGETC.pdf

Notice that the first section is Area 1 - ENGLISH COMMUNICATION and the page indicates that for UC transfers you need to complete two courses, one satisfying Area 1A and one satisfying Area 1B. If you do a google search you should be able to find the IGETC form for your college that tells you which courses will satisfy each of those sections. Once you satisfy 1A and 1B you’re good for Area 1, but from the looks of that website it’s definitely important that you get both those English courses down by the end of next spring.

Hi guys, I am also planning on applying to transfer to UCLA for Fall 2017.

Here are my stats:

Major: Mathematics of Computation
UC GPA: 4.0
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Done
Major Prep: Done in Spring
TAP: N/A

EC’s:

  • Currently a student club council representative for my school’s Math club
  • Currently the president of my school’s coders (Computer Science) club
  • Was previously a student club council representative for my school’s coders (Computer Science) club
  • Volunteer for Code For America, a non-profit organization that hosts software projects to help deal with issues such as environmental sustainability, homelessness, public health, etc.
  • Computer Science tutor

Basically I decided that I am going to apply to UCLA under their Mathematics of Computation major rather than their Computer Science major because I want a good amount of exposure to both Math and Computer Science and UCLA’s Computer Science major in HSSEAS seems very restricting in terms of major requirements/electives. However, I still want to be able to get as much exposure to Computer Science as possible if I transfer to UCLA. I saw that UCLA’s Mathematics of Computation major requires 3 upper division Computer Science classes but I was just wondering how difficult it would be to take upper division Computer Science classes beyond that since Computer Science is in HSSEAS and the school has a lot of academic restrictions.
