@Ryan1812 I’d say you’re in =D>
Please Chance me!
Major: Computer Science
Cumulative GPA: 3.89 ( ‘C’ in a non transferable college algebra math course)
Transfer/Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Done
Major Prep: Done in Spring
W’s: 3 (First Two semesters in CC)
Others that might affect admission:
-In the first two semesters in CC, I’ve gotten few NP(No pass) in non-transferable English courses
-Received ‘F’ in a non-transferable math course (Replaced)
EC’s:
-President of Association for Computing Machinery School Chapter
-Computer Science Tutor for 3 Semesters
-Computer Science Award
-Mesa
-Deans List
@screename9
Your cumulative gpa doesn’t count. UCs look at remedial English, but cumulative GPA is out of their view.
I think you are also in. Given that you would keep your GPA as close to 4.0 as possible
@screename9 Even your cumulative GPA is above the 25th percentile for recently admitted transfer students to the computer science major at UCLA, but apparently only GPA from transferable courses counts. Based on that and your ECs (which are focused and show an interest in your major) I think you have a decent chance. Good luck!
can someone chance me? currently at LACC, about to start sophomore year. (sorry for any typos/grammar errors, I’m frantically stressing over this and it’s 5AM, lol)
GPA: 4.0
Credits Finished: 19, currently registered for 14 this coming semester. (I have some credits from AP exams, CSUF bc of my high school program, Harvard bc of a summer school program, so if I count those, I’m close to the 60 unit requirement.) (Also, I only took two classes in my first CC semester bc I got dropped from one bc of not attending, will that look bad? I just have a W on my transcript but it didn’t affect my GPA.)
Major: Undecided right now, but leaning towards Gender Studies (bc of the acceptance rate and bc I already finished the required classes. might switch to history but it’s unlikely.)
IGETC: 3/4 completed
I don’t know if anything would affect my admission besides my first semester situation which i explained. Bc of that, I was put on temporary academic probation. But that was all.
Extra-Curriculars
- Speech Contest, got 3rd place. Will be joining the speech and debate team once the semester starts.
And that’s all. I really want to apply to my school’s honor program, but then if I want the UCLA advantages, I would need to have taken two semesters while in the program, so if I do that, then I wouldn’t be able to put it until after I submitted my UC application. Would I still have a good chance of getting in if I wasn’t in those TAP/etc programs?
Also for extra curricular, I am currently applying for numerous jobs, so if I get one before submitting the app, would it count as an EC? Also, I do volunteer for a few things, but I’m mot heavily involved. Should I still put those down anyway?
I’m really stressing bc I really want to go to UCLA in fall 2017 but I feel like I haven’t done enough. Any feedback/suggestions/tips/advice would help me a lot.
@cmdchavezz Hey fellow Cub!
1)Honors is kind of hard to get. You have to get an add card from the professor I believe and meanwhile it might be worthwhile to go that far, it’s not a necessity. Ralph Bunche Honors confused me the first year, and I didn’t go near it.
- Job is an excellent EC!
3)Make sure to get all those 19 credits from outside transfers to UC. Make sure they transfer if they were meant to complete Major requirements or IGETC. Lastly, make sure you fulfill 60 units before transfer.
-
Gender Studies is an excellent idea. Albeit it worries me that you’ve chosen because of admission rate. If you do well and finish major requirements with stellar GPA, then you’ll get in regardless of what other applicants bring to the table. Thus I don’t believe in acceptance rate any more than GPA range for certain majors. However, as far as my first year in college, I’ve switched my major 3 times. You’ll have something that suits your personal taste and personal academic endeavor.
-
I have 4 Ws and heck, I don’t care about Ws because nobody says anything bad about it. You can have 3 Ws without worrying about it at all. But it should only raise your attention if you have more than 3. Then you have to be self-aware not to withdraw anymore courses.
Got 2 questions to ask.
- When did you start attending LACC? (Since you said it’s your sophomore year, but I’m still confused)
- Out of 19 units, how many are from outside? Or are the outside units excluded from that number?
@laccstudent thanks for answering. The 19 credits aren’t from outside, they’re from LACC. And I’m enrolled for 14 credits this coming semester. For outside credits, I have about 18, but I have yet to meet with a counselor to help me with whether they’re all transferable or not, but I know 12 of them definitely are. And I started at LACC in August 2015. Also, I picked Gender Studies bc I really enjoyed my classes and I was interested in minoring in it anyway. If I could, I would want to major in PoliSci, International Relations or Global Studies, but I am far from fulfilling the class requirements and the acceptance rates aren’t high. I really want to get into UCLA so I’m fine with majoring in Gender Studies bc I enjoy the major. My only concern about it is whether it would do me any good in the future when I start looking for careers. Also, if I did get accepted, would it be easy to change majors? Not that I’m planning on it, but just in case. And I don’t have a job yet. If I don’t get a job before the application is due, would my current EC’s not be enough?
Also, have you been accepted to UCLA already? Or do you know if a lot of people who weren’t in the honors program still got accepted?
@cmdchavezz A lot of people get accepted to UCLA without honors. Some people do honors program in the hopes that they get into impacted programs/majors at UC Berkeley or UCLA. Or they want to have a second chance to get reviewed on their second major of choice. A lot of people, I would say high majority of people get accepted without doing any honors. Social Science like Gender Studies will favor any students with GPA close to 4.0. If you keep your 4.0 till the end of this fall, you’ll get in. 19+14 = 33. 19 units for a full academic year seems very low. I am at my second year and I have 45 units. You need at least 27 more units. You have 12 units that will transfer over, which leaves you with 15 units. Which portion of IGETC haven’t you finished? I can recommend you some courses. I will message you about them. You can perhaps plan out your winter and spring semester based on the courses I have recommended. Keep going and make sure you take 15 units by the end of Spring.
I’m not a UCLA student but I want to get into UC Berkeley the most.
Also, I’m just like you, applying this cycle and started school around the same time.
If you love Gender Studies, you have a good reason for your personal statement. State that you enjoyed the course that you took and gave you an insight perhaps. And your ECs are enough, I bet they won’t care since they expect you to focus on school or supporting yourself (job is a strong one). I did volunteer only during summer
It won’t be easy to change your major after you’ve been accepted but you can do it if you have fulfilled the requirement. The chance is slim though, and the process is difficult. Gender Studies seems really good. I like how the elective upper division requirements for Gender Studies are diverse. You can take a lot of other social studies and other disciplines for your elective (7 courses- 28 units).
@cmdchavezz
Also, I want to give you more of my opinion about choosing your major. Any graduate with Bachelor degree in Social Science/Humanity will face a difficult time to find a job. But it’s still true for other natural sciences and other majors as well (but not Engineers perhaps). Life is a long road. Look at Graduate school and look for other disciplines meanwhile taking electives. For me example, I was in love with Anthropology already. Ever since Middle school, I remembered all the homininis’ scientific name. I love seeing people’s face when I show them that I can name them all. My introduction to Western Civ in 6th grade blew my mind so far and so good that I knew Anthropology was my passion. I want to study Anthropology a lot. But after bachelor’s degree, it’s not like I will be forever bounded by a contract to pursue a career in Anthropology. I might want to study something else for Graduate. The best example would be medicine. I want to pursue a career in medicine and even if I fail to get in after multiple cycle, I could go on to do other natural sciences or pursue different fields. It all goes down to this one point: study Gender Studies, and look for Graduate. You’ll find similar students like me. Who majors in something they enjoy, and study something deeper in Graduate. Some students do, in fact, want to major in something like Economics, all Engineerings, and etc; in the hopes that they find a job right after UG(Undergrad). They are all competitive and it’s safe to say that they are well-prepared to enter the job market. But some students just enter college just to explore options. One option is to earn a PhD in something that they enjoyed during their Undergrad or follow a career in medicine like Medical (Allo/Osteo), Dentistry, Optometry, Psychiatry, Nurse, PT & etc. With your Gender Studies BA degree, you have a very good chance at Law School as well I’d say go for Law school and make changes in the current system!!
Study hard and study something you enjoy. Get ready for Graduate!
@cmdchavezz If you were put on academic probation, how do you have a 4.0? Did you get some sort of academic renewal?
@laccstudent We’re kind of in the same boat with our journey and future plans, so I was wondering if you put that you’re going to do pre-med in your application? For me, I don’t want it to look like I’m just using the anthro major to get in… I actually fell in love with it, but for the required insight question where it asks about future plans/major I KNOW I want to go to med school. I’m not sure whether to state that or just fluff something. Thoughts?
@LynAmmo I don’t think it’s necessary to mention that at all. Not sure if it’s required to mention your future plans. It doesn’t say anywhere
I’ve just looked at the questions.
http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/how-to-apply/personal-questions/transfer/index.html
Main question is about how you have found interested in Anthropology.
Q1 asks about your leadership & influence on others
Q2 asks about your creativity & your flair (creative problem solving, artful & innovative thinking, etc).
Q3 asks about your talent & skill.
Q4 asks about how you took your opportunity in education or overcome any difficulty in academics.
Q5 asks about how you managed any challenges you have faced.
Q6 asks about how you made your community (schools, etc) a better place
Q7 asks about how you are an unique applicant (or what makes you significant).
Telling them why Anthropology interests you will be sufficient. It seems like you have a great reason to major in Anthropology (if you tell them why you love about it)
And also, @cmdchavezz might have got an academic probation because if you have 50% or more incomplete progress in one semester, you’ll get it. She was dropped from one course out of two, that’s 50%. Not sure, but I believe it’s based on units too, not just number of courses.
@LynAmmo i wasn’t dropped from the course. i was put on probation bc i was the one who dropped 2/4 courses that semester. it didn’t affect my gpa bc i dropped it before it could.
@LynAmmo idk if that makes sense but basically i dropped the course, the course didn’t drop me. therefore, it didn’t affect my grades.
when in the transfer process upon submitting your app, do they care about the GPA that you are applying with or the GPA you will have before transferring(spring 2017) ? I am an english major with a 3.72 but after this fall semester I should have a 3.82. I am an honors student at my CC and will be tap certified. IGETC is already completed, 1 more major pre req to finish in the spring. I work and also have many volunteer involvements. Last semester I took 24 units and got a 3.83 GPA for that semester, is that something they will take into account for an applicant. Also I am currently taking 20 units all transferable. I did unfortunately get a B in an major req class, will that mess up my chances? What are my chances of getting in, and what are some things I can do to make myself more of a competitive applicant? Thanks!
@uclahopeful2017 - nice to see you again! I hope you got your Spanish foreign lang requirement plus foreign lit courses squared away.
They look at the Fall grades, possibly Winter grades if they need to when you submit your TAU. Upon acceptance you would receive a conditional letter stating “… no grades below a B…” etc.
As a parent of an English major who transferred, I’d say you have a very very good chance at acceptance, especially with TAP completed. You can also apply as an American Lit & Culture or Comparative Lit as your alternate major and then switch to the English major. These two majors have lower acceptance profiles.
The B grade will not mess up your chances.
To be a more competitive applicant, if your ECs were related to English somehow – tutoring, reading to kids, volunteering in the library, etc, that would be helpful. The essays are important and could also help, however I cannot comment on the new essay process.
can someone chance me again? i already wrote everything in a previous reply above, but i just realized that the college courses i took in high school count towards my gpa, so my total GPA is actually 3.2 and not a 4.0. After this semester, it should rise to a 3.5, but the application is due before my final grades come out. What do my chances look like? Does it still look ok if all my CC grades are straight A’s even though my GPA is so low bc of my dumb high school choices? Or will they just dismiss me right away bc of that low GPA?
@cmdchavezz The UC’s like upward trends, so you should be okay. The thing I’m looking at is your unit count, if you don’t make it to the 60 then this all really doesn’t even matter. Try and ask for academic renewal if there are D’s and F’s or try and retake the classes for A’s if you can. If you get to a 3.5 partnered with the Gender Studies major, you should be good… but again I’m no expert, just my thoughts
@LynAmmo thank you so much. i actually talked to someone at my UC transfer center today and it turns out that including my previous college courses from high school plus the units i completed at my CC, i have a total of 34 units done. also, i’m enrolled for 17 credits this semester now so by next semester, i will only need 9 credits more. plus i have 3 ap scores that count towards units so i might even have more than 60.
@LynAmmo and also, even if i take the same classes at my current CC, it won’t change any of my grades bc i got them from different universities.
@cmdchavezz Awesome! I’ll be at 54 at the end of Fall semester too :D/ & you guys have your own UC transfer center!? Lucky, we pretty much have to figure it out ourselves haha. I’m literally constantly jittery, always thinking about transfer, deadlines, applications, scholarships, etc… This is gonna be a stressful school year :(( Can’t wait until it’s over.
