Fall 2018 students. Or anyone who can help. Am I in or not?!

So I got into my first choice school, SFSU Industrial design (because it’s a 2 year program, instead of 4-5). However, I got “in” the school. I need help clearing up this confusion.
The school undergraduate admissions dept. sent me an email congratulating me on getting accepted into SFSU with my class year (jr.) and department (industrial design, and not my “second” major). The other day I got the acceptance package, and have an option of now confirming or declining my admission to the school.

When I called the design department, they said I’m a “pre-major, and you can be waitlisted, accepted or declined”. They’re supposed to make their decision soon and let us know by mid-feb/march…Supposedly. They also stated (this was in December) that they haven’t even looked at the applications. I find it extremely hard to believe that some poor person(s) will sit there and flick through hundreds of applications.

So I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have a clear acceptance letter stating my department and major from the school, then the department itself saying they’ll let me know if I’m in the major by march, and I may be waitlisted, accepted or tossed into my second major (turned down). However, I don’t even have the required classes for my second major, really.

I’m utterly confused at this point. Undergraduate department says “yes, we have you listed as a student in industrial design as a junior” and the department says they haven’t even made decisions.

Do I hit accept or not? I don’t want to accept, then end up somehow not being in my major. How backwards is that, that the school can accept, ask to pay 100$ enrollment fee, and I may or may not be in the design major.

Any help to clear this confusion would be great!

(Low key, I also don’t understand how you can get 150 applications, and have to take 3 months to go through them. Colleges work in a funny way).

You have been admitted to SFSU but your application needs to be reviewed specifically by the SFSU school of Design to see if you have completed the required 2 pre-major courses needed to be accepted into the major.

If you have completed the 2 required pre-major courses then you should be fine.

TRANSFER STUDENTS:
• Preferred: ONE College level Drawing, Sketching, or Drafting course and ONE Computer-Graphic Software
course (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, or CAD). Productivity/business applications do not qualify.
• Alternative: Any course articulated to the SF State courses shown below as stated at www.assist.org.
Print out the course transfer equivalencies listed from the relevant school attended and attach. If a course you took is not listed on www.assist.org and you request an evaluation of its equivalency, list the course(s) with grade below and attach the computer printout of the online catalog description(s) of the course(s).

So should I just confirm my choice, because I took more than 2 required courses…I just don’t want to end up denied ad tossed into my second major fr whatever reason.

You could contact the School of Design admissions and see what they say about your acceptance before enrolling.

I did, and they simply told me that I’m not actually in the major. I’m still being considered.

What I don’t get is why the school would say I’m actually in the program (as per my acceptance letter), but I’m not actually in the program.

Regardless, I’m going to accept…Perhaps that will show serious intent on wanting to attend the school? I’d rather not move away, I’m a little too old (28, when school starts in fall) with a career (I work in marketing) and everything, just to up and leave somewhere else for a few years.

Best of luck and fingers crossed it all works out.
