I saw on the school calendar that Parent's Weekend is just 10 days after the student's have a four day weekend for Fall break. I don't understand why those two events are so close together. We booked a hotel room to visit our son for Parent's Weekend but now I am thinking we should cancel it since we will most likely fly him home just over a week earlier. Do most parent's of OOS freshman attend Parent's Weekend? Do most student's leave campus for Fall break?

Yea, not sure what they were thinking.

Lots of parents come down and a bunch of students leave. Maybe not “most students” but I’d say at least a third.

This time last year (when D was a HS senior admitted to Emory) I booked a flight and hotel for parents weekend, convinced we would visit, then as it got closer, D said she’d rather come home for the weekend, so she did her parents weekend at home, with her parents.

I know Emory plans a lot of fun and interesting things for that weekend, but for her, she just wanted to get off campus for a little while (having been there since early August) so this was better for us.

Do most kids go home for Fall Break?

I did read somewhere that a lot of kids leave for fall break, since it is a four day weekend (whereas Parent’s weekend, one week later, is only Saturday and Sunday). Since coming home involves a flight for our son, it makes more sense for him to come home Fall break. Unfortunately, we won’t know how intense his schoolwork load is that weekend before needing to book the flight.

Now that I think about it, I think D came home Fall Break – it was a long weekend.

seiclan – can you book the flight and get trip insurance so you don’t lose if you end up rescheduling? By the time October rolls around, freshman often need a break.

I’d guess bout 1/3 of students go home (or at least somewhere on vacation with friends) for fall break.

Any homework/other work your kids would have can be done at home, so don’t worry about that when you’re booking your flight for them.

I believe a majority of freshmen parents come for Family Weekend.
It’s a great chance to learn more about the university and to make sure everything is on track.

I believe a majority of freshmen do not go home for fall break.

We are going up for family weekend next weekend but my son and husband don’t want to do the welcome address or picnics at the school. What would be a nice way to spend our afternoon? I was thinking either the aquarium or the World of Coca Cola exhibit. Any good suggestions for Sunday brunch?

Murphy’s in Virginia Highlands for brunch. Best to make a reservation: 404 872 0904.

Have you seen the collection of Egyption sarcophagi and the oldest mummy at the Carlos Museum?

We got back yesterday from Parent’s Weekend. I love Atlanta! Great restaurants, cool neighborhoods, so much to do, beautiful scenery. We went to two great places for brunch (on Saturday and Sunday), The Flying Biscuit in Buckhead and Murphy’s (thanks chazsf). Both were fantastic. Bones Steakhouse was a fabulous place to take my son and his roommate for great steaks in an elegant atmosphere on Saturday night. I think we will come visit again in the Spring so we can try more restaurants!
