I would love some information about move-in for freshman. As a parent who will have two children heading to college this fall, I am wondering how UMD handles freshman move-in. Do freshman all move in on the same day or is it done by college enrolled in? I see classes begin Aug. 30 -can anyone give me information on when freshman move in and how it is done.

Pima (of Bulletandpima) started a great thread on this last year…maybe she will resurrect it for the new folks.

Last year, if I remember correctly, honors freshmen moved in on Thursday, non-honors freshmen on Friday and everyone else over the weekend before classes started on Monday. I remember one part of the advice from Pima that worked great: three people to move in, one parent to drive and then park, one parent to off-load and stay with the student’s stuff at the curb and the student runs in to check in and get keys. That made our journey and off-load a LOT faster. Also a LOT of people get there when it first opens, we had to wait due to son’s NROTC Orientation and didn’t move him in until mid-afternoon, but that was great because we were able to get the little wheeled bins and the elevators were not completely jammed.

Our son’s dorm had their first hall meetings @ 3 p.m. that day, I don’t know if that is typical but that was a tad difficult to work around since we walked into his room for the first time at about 2:45.

Oh…another bit of Pima advice that I loved and followed: Just walk away. (As in, when it’s time to go, just go. It really is the best way.)

Good luck…I’m sure tons more advice will follow.

I figured out how to find the old thread on this topic. Here’s the link:

Bringing back this helpful thread with one additional question. Many schools have programs for parents of freshmen, is there anything at Maryland? We are looking at dates to book our flights and hotel. Wed, the 28th is the move in day for Honors. Should we plan on coming in on Tues and leaving Thurs?

I don’t think they have the schedule up yet, but I seem to remember a parent reception/program on the day of move-in. I didn’t attend though…

If you need to know because of flights, then I would call the department of resident life and ask:
Phone: (301) 314-2100, E-mail: reslife@umd.edu

I don’t think classes start until September 3rd

Last year, the school tried a new thing for move-in. They made specific dates and times of the day that people move in based on what dorm they are going to live in. The different areas were split up into North Hill, South Hill, and The High Rises. Move in was from the friday to the tuesday right before classes. Only certain dorms were allowed to move in on friday, the same for saturday, sunday, and so forth. The high rises like Elkton, denton, ellicot, etc, started moving in on saturday, I believe. The move in for these dorms were even more specific. For example, people who lived on the 1 and 2 floor moved in between 8am-12pm on saturday, the people on the 3-4 floor moved in between 12pm-4pm, and etc. Seems complicated but I think this made the whole move-in process run more smoothly.

I have no idea if they’ll do the same for this Fall, but if I had to guess, I’d say they would. You can borrow yellow bins with wheels on move-in days to help you move your stuff in, but be expected that you’ll have to carry it the rest of the way to the room once you’re inside. I believe only high rises have elevators so keep that in mind.

So, for parents that will be moving kids in that are OOS, can we book flights home the day after move in?

For the honors kids that are moving so early, what do they do for the 5 days before class begins?

Hi! While I am sure the honors kids have additional programming, all new students have loads of activities going on that are organized by the department of resident life through their “New Resident Orientation” program. If you, or your daughter, can access facebook, look up “University of Maryland DRL New Resident Orientation (NRO) 2012” to see what they did last year. Just scroll down to dates in August to get a sense.

So, yes, you absolutely can book flights the day after move in because all the kids will be taking advantage of getting to know each other through all the activities…they even had a bus take the kids to a local Target after hours so they could all shop for whatever they forgot to bring or decided they wanted to add to their rooms to decorate…

I know that the scholars are moving in on Wednesday the 28th.
