fall qs

SO, i have a question about math placement. i scored high enough on the act to be exempt from the placement exam, so what math does that mean i have to take?

also, i am on the waiting list for James Madison. how likely is it that i'll get into the program by the fall?

thanks, allyson

The MSU general ed. math requirement is 1 course of math in any level (above Math 1825). In madison, 1 course of math is all that’s required (although you will have to take 1 or 2 research survey/statistics courses depending on your madison major). If you haven’t taken the math placement, generally it is up to you. If the highest math class you’ve taken in high school is pre-calc, then you probably want to take MTH 124 (survey of calculus). If the highest math class you’ve taken in high school is calculus/AP calculus+, then you probably want to take MTH 132 (Calculus I) or something higher-level. If the highest math class you’ve taken is geometry/algebra/you are not very good at math, students take MTH 103/104?, 108, or 116 depending. Talk to the advisor at AOP for better advice regarding this. If you are taking the AP calc exam and pass with a 4 or 5, you won’t have to take math at MSU.

As for the madison waiting list, it depends. I think most people on the waiting list get in by fall, but no guarantees. The best thing I can tell you to do is to be persistent. Send emails or talk to JMC advisors- reemphasize how much you want to be in madison and that will likely help your case.

Yeah, I took Pre-Calc my junior year and AP Statistics my senior year of HS… I don’t think I’m ready for regular calculus. I kind of want to take the next step in Statistics, except I’m not positive if I got credit on the AP exam, although I did really well in the class. So should I just sign up for MTH 132 and then adjust it at orientation? I’m just scared all of the classes will be taken by then.

I actually emailed Lindsay Thornhill a couple of days back about me being on the waiting list. I told her I was really interested & if she had any questions or if she needed any additional information for her to contact me via email. However, she hasn’t responded, so I’m thinking I should call the office. I realllllllly want to go to James Madison.

I promise you, not all of the classes will be taken by then (MSU is a huge school…TONS of classes are offered…I went to August orientation my freshman year and even then was able to get in all of the classes I wanted). In terms of the math class to take, I really think you should talk to an advisor at your AOP. No one here can really speak definitively about what math class would be best for you.

Calling the JMC office certainly wouldn’t hurt, go right ahead! I’m not sure it’d help either, but you might as well give it a shot. If you don’t hear anything from them by AOP, just make sure to talk to the JMC advisor in person if you can there.
