Fall Quarter Classes

So I'm an incoming Freshmen and was wondering if it would be a good idea to wait on GE's till second or third quarter? I kinda want to take just classes related to my potential major first quarter to a) see if I like it and b) if I do start projects related to my major (I'm a CS major and plan to want to make games).

Any past or current students have done this or think that it's a good idea?

Doesn’t really matter all that much actually, just take them in any order you want. The reason to go for major-related classes earlier would be because you can see whether or not you actually want to go through with it, but other than that, I took two GE’s, Writing, and Math (I’m a math major, so only one class really applied towards my major) and yeah, it wasn’t too bad.

You have four years to meet the GE requirements. If you are undecided about what you want to do, it makes sense to take breadth classes early – and it always makes sense to take Writing early. However, if you are sure of your major, it can be better to clear out major prerequisites as early as possible. That’s because you’ll be able to fit GE classes into your schedule when it’s convenient – or take them in summer school – but some major courses will be offered once a year.

Sometimes you can’t take certain CS classes until you’ve taken the pre-requisites. As long as you take 1-2 courses in CS, you’ll have plenty of interaction through your peers and professors during officers to help you figure it out. Things really get real when you are actually on campus!

I do want to add that avoiding GEs while taking core classes help you concentrate on your major for that GPA. However, GEs can be used to hit the full-time minimum units (12 units) and give you a breather while taking other hard courses (ie 2 compsci courses and 1 GE).
