fall semester schedule + a few questions

Hey everyone, I'd appreciate if I could have some input -

I'm currently signed up for CIS120, MATH104, CHIN011, PSYC001 and MKTG101. I'm in SEAS but I already know I definitely want a dual degree with the College - Computer Science with either Communications, Criminology, Political Science, or Psychology. Depending on which one I end up choosing, a minor in American Public Policy, Consumer Psychology, Fine Arts or Engineering Entrepreneurship sounds interesting to me too. So I have a few questions:

1) How difficult should I expect my fall semester to be? Considering what I want to do (I know it will involve lots of classes every semester) are there other classes I should be taking instead?

2) Is a dual-degree + a minor plausible in four years? How about five? If I want to be involved in a bunch of extracurriculars too (a sport, a club, rush a sorority, have a job, etc...) should I be less ambitious?

4) Would I be able to work my schedule out so I could study abroad for a semester or would that be too difficult?

5) Would a dual-degree be better or worse than simply pursuing 2-3 minors along with CS?

6) Which of the minors/majors listed above would be the best fit with a BSE computer science degree?

7) Can you double major CS + Digital Media Design?

8) Is SEAS submatriculation still possible if I do a dual-degree?

Sorry, I know it's a lot of questions, but I've been thinking about this for ages and finally decided to ask here. Hopefully y'all can give me some good insight. Thanks!

Haha “a few questions…”

Ok so i can’t answer all of these, but I might be able to help out with a few…

 1. Fall semester doesn’t look TOO bad. You are taking 5 classes, but intro psych is supposed to be pretty easy, unless I am mistaken.

2)dual-degree and minor is definitely plausible for 5 (but do you really want your parents to pay for a fifth year?). for 4, you’d have to have a lot of overlap between majors and minor to accomplish this. But then again, i don’t know if there will be much overlap for two majors from different schools.

3) You skipped number 3!

4) Studying abroad would be harder with two majors (and especially with a minor), but if you already have proficiency in language, i don’t think it’s impossible (however, you might have to take a summer course, or two, or three, so that you don’t go insane with a ton of courses)

5) 2-3 minors seems like a lot… Which one is better depends on what you’re interested in after Penn. I would pick whatever is more interesting to you, or whatever you think will benefit you more in a future job. For example, Computer Science and Psychology would be excellent because there should be a lot of overlap, and if you are looking at the artificial intelligence side of CS, Psych could come in handy. Basically, I can’t really answer this question lol

6) i thought psych would go well with cs, but depending on what you want to do after Penn, criminology, for example, could be more suitable.

7 and 8) Not sure about either. Try asking your pre-major advisor and/or peer advisors. Or email someone in the SEAS department.

I hope this was at least somewhat helpful. Keep in mind that I am only an incoming freshman, so my advice lacks the credibility of your advisors’.

the answer to 7 and 8 is yes
