Fall Waitlist - GOT THE CALL

Just got the call that my DS is in for the fall 2013 semester. He was waitlisted for the the fall and had the spring offer! :) :) VERY HAPPY!

Who else got the call?

I know like 5 other people did. I really want my friend to get off the waitlist .

but a different choice had already been made. Good luck

Hey Rob (BingUStudent),

all I kept hearing was that they might not take anyone off the waitlist. Weither it was in webcasts or in person or from anyone.

now they took some people off the waitlist before the deposits were even due yet… what changed? do you know?

(granted I am NOT complaining and I am VERY HAPPY but I am curious to know how they went from thinking no one might come off the waitlist to accepting people off the waitlist before the deposts were even due.

any idea?

I’m not Rob, but it’s probably because a lot of students declined the offer before the due date, leaving open spots for this fall.

^^I know we did. Liked the school so much, but we’d be paying twice as much for a SUNY school than the private school we chose (that costs $62K!)

What school was it?

Bowdoin. Really liked Bing tho’…and it definately would have been a serious consideration had we not been priced out. But I think we did OK :)

while I tend to agree with you… all they have been saying about the waitlist is that they doubt they are taking many if any off the waitlist at all. they have kept saying that they think they got it right when it comes to the amount of people they accepted. I heard it on 2 webcasts and several other Binghamton sources.

its strange that after saying that a few times, they started taking off the waitlist even before the May 1st deadline.

(I happen to be VERY grateful they did this. It saved me $250 for a deposit I put down on another school. The deadline for a refund was 05/01. If they told us 1 day later, I would probably not be able to get the deposit back.)

According to Bing’s common data set for 2012-13, 1,588 students were offered places on the waitlist, 460 accepted, and 44 were admitted.

that was last year. I would love to know what this year will be

Hi! My name is Rob and I’m a Binghamton University Student Ambassador.

I don’t know exactly what changed. I haven’t heard anything from any admissions counselors or my supervisory staff in the tour guide program or the student ambassador program about the wait list since the initial announcement that we likely wouldn’t be admitting many students off of it. It’s great that you got in, though - congratulations!

~Rob

my son was wait listed but not offered spring admission. Are they only offering spots to those offered spring admission or are they offering to ‘regular’ wait listed students as well.

I believe that there is a chance that people that were just waitlisted might be taken. 2 weeks ago I might not have thought that because all I kept hearing was that they would probably not take many, if any, people off the waitlist.

then 1 day BEFORE the may 1st deposit deadline my son along with many more people that were waitlisted with the spring offer was offered a spot for the fall 2013 semester.

If they did this before the May 1st deposit deadline, it sounds like they knew they were off with their counts for admission. This would give me hope if I was on the waitlist.

I would have your son call or write a letter or even visit to try to show them that this is his number one choice and he really wants to go there. if he has done anything more since the last time they reviewed him (better marks, leadership in something, etc) he should bring it to their attention.

I know people will disagree with the above paragraph but I don’t think it would hurt. I drove from Brooklyn to Binghamton (3 1/2 hours) just to have my son talk to the admissions office for about 20 minutes and then drove home. I thought it was worth it. The counselor was extremely nice and he had a great conversation with my son. Did it help? I have no way of knowing. We went on a Friday and he was accepted the very next Tues (2 business days later). Many more people also got accepted, so I don’t know if it helped but I know it didn’t hurt.

good luck to your son

i was originally wait listed (no spring admission but I applied to Watson)and heard of people getting called off the wait list. I never got any call but then checked my email and saw that I was accepted inti watson fall 2013(my status checker never changed). I had emailed and called the admission officer a few weeks ago. I would definitely recommend having your son call an admissions person and have his name known. They’ve already taken 4 kids in my school off the wait list so it seems like they have a lot if space. Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback hftmrock and proto29. We have been writing and e-mailing for about 6 weeks and have made his desire known, believe me! Its so frustrating because we have to proceed with his next choice and start filling out paperwork as if he is going there. I guess its just patience at this point. Again, thank you both.
