Falling in love with my safety.

Do you think it's it worth it to go to a good public school instead of a great private just because of that "feeling"?

What are the schools, the prices, and your priorities?

@gadad
Miami University vs. Beloit, Vassar, Grinnell, and Hamilton, though I’m still waiting on admissions decisions for most of them. Miami is in-state public, so it won’t be very expensive, but I tried to pick private schools with good financial aid. I haven’t made my choice yet, of course, since I don’t have a final list of acceptances or financial aid awards yet, but I’ve been in contact with the MU staff the past couple days and they’ve done a damn good job of convincing me it’s the kind of place I wanna end up at.

I’m looking to study Chinese and Russian. My highest priorities are a robust language program, small classes taught by professors, and quality UNDERGRAD tuition.

It is perfectly fine to fall in love with your safety. In fact, it is the one institution on your list that you should do your best to develop affection for!

As for the others, wait until you have your admissions offers and financial aid packages on the table to decide whether it is worth it to you to develop any feelings toward them.

Agree with happymomof1. The safety is the most important school on the list, and it ought to be a financial as well as an academic safety. Fortunately for you, it sounds as if Miami meets both criteria. Have you visited yet?

It’s wonderful that you can consider Miami to be a safety. For the majority of college applicants, it would be a dream school, and for some, an unobtainable dream. Your other four schools are all excellent too, but I’d guess that many students in your position would choose Miami, even if the cost for all five was the same!

gadad, I think that Kudryavka is talking about Miami U of Ohio which is a public U. Not U of Miami in Florida which is private.

^ I think gadad knows Miami U is public. OP even states it.

OP, many people actually think Miami is a public school with many private-like attributes. You really are lucky!

My D also fell in love with her safety and wll graduate in less than 3 months.

Yup - I’m talking about Miami of Ohio. In higher ed it’s held in especially high regard among public universities. Despite producing Roethlisberger! :)
