Okay, so I write fan fiction and it’s honestly how I dipped my toes in writing, got started writing, and it’s meant a lot to me growing up. Thus, 'm planning to make writing fan fiction the topic of a college application essay that asks me what’s meaningful to me.
Obviously, everything I write is all very school-appropriate; I don’t profit/make money off of my work; and only I write in fandoms where authors approve of fan fiction being written.
That said, I know fan fiction is pretty legally gray. If an AO sees my essay being written about fan fiction, will they question the legality of this activity? Disregarding the appeal/quality of the essay itself, will blatantly stating that I engage in potentially illegal (or at least sue-able) activity…destroy my chances?
