FAQ for USC Admissions

How easy is it to transfer with colleges? change majors?

If ACT scores aren’t superscored then should I send all of my scores or just my highest composite?

I live in the Bay Area, and I just got the yellow envelope in the mail! I’ve been invited to interview for the half-tuition Presidential Scholarship, although it doesn’t really matter because I’m a National Merit Finalist. Can someone explain how that works – should I decline the interview?

literatimuffin, check out my answer on the other thread. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/1719773-official-usc-class-of-2019-results-discussion-thread.html#latest

hi alamemom,
I received the yellow envelope and inside I only got a my certificate of admission, general packets of the school, and my current enrollment status, I didnt receive any letter regarding any scholarship… Does this mean I didnt qualify for any of the scholarships although I was admitted early? Or is it going to come in the mail separately?

alamemom may not be coming around cc regularly this year, but to answer your question, @newduhls, in past years it meant you ended up getting a separate letter telling you you’ve earned a Dean’s scholarship–no interview necessary. It may be the same this year, but we won’t know until those letters are received (or not). Good luck and congratulations.

I got into USC for Accounting, but I didn’t get any scholarships or grants. However, I got half-tuition paid at Santa Clara University and I will stay at home. Where should I attend?

@ancafeninja Santa Clara has a great business school that is well connected in Silicon Valley. Is money an issue? Do you want the away/big spirit experience? Is staying in a dorm at SCU an option? That is an incredible price difference, but even if money is no object, you have to really want to go to USC to justify it. I don’t think there is difference in quality of the programs. SV loves SCU’s business and engineering school. You would be paying for the life experience of USC and have to decide if that is worth it. You will get a great education and connections out of SCU too. Good luck!

Did you already decide? (Just saw your post…)

I’m applying for merit-based scholarships as an international student. How selective is the process?

lmao just submitted my application. i’m in CA, so its still dec.1 but commonapp says its dec. 2 EST. but the USC site says that it considers your time zone (explicit in FAQs). can anyone confirm? I submitted my app for merit consideration at 11: 35pm PST. im still considered right? thanks!

You are fine, yes, PST.

Anyone surprised by their financial aid? I thought USC met “full demonstrated need”. I got little in the way of grants but, conversely, got considerable FA–and all grants at that–from Pomona and some east coast universities. Does USC prioritize FA to those it “really” wants like NYU and BU?

Full demonstrated need means very different things to applicants versus USC. That is always the biggest problem. Many many will feel the same way and be surprised what they have to pay to attend.

@klingon97 We were not only surprised, we were shocked by USC’s offer to us. It bordered on ridiculous. They gave us the least amount of aid of all the private schools.

Phase II - the brutal reality of getting into a college. What you have to pay for it. ugh.

does anybody know if USC really looks at additional information/applicant updates? I updated them with some very prestigious awards in Feb and I received a response, and I emailed them with another email to update my file with more awards early March but I did not receive a response from that and instead was instructed to upload the file through the portal (which I did around one week into March) This most recent is absolutely CRUCIAL to my application as I have extremely good news to update my file with.

I was admitted to the second major I listed on the Common App. Does anyone know if I’m waitlisted for my first choice or if there is any way to transfer once I attend? 1st choice was Industrial Engineering and 2nd Economics.

I just realized that I did not submit my “Schedule E From Parents’ 2015 Federal Tax Return” and financial aid information will be released tomorrow. Does this mean I can’t get any financial aid although I turned in everything else?! Help

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but FWIW this came through my email today: USC Advice for Viterbi applicants from Dean.

Do female computer science applicant get any boost in admission? If the female candidate has very high unweighted GPA above 3.95 and courses like like Multi variable calculus, AP Physics C, AP Chem, AP Bio, AP US History, AP language etc. in high school?
