Fas Regna Trojae - Endowment Campaign

Does anyone know if there is some sort of page on the USC site with updated totals and goal progress? I can only find goals and individual articles about people donating large sums of money, but I'd really like to see how much progress they've made since August because it seems like there have been a lot of donations lately.

No there isn’t. However, I expect them to post one once we hit a certain mark. As of right now, we are very close to 2 billion raised in a little over a year.

I went through all of the news articles on the “giving to USC” page and added them up, and the total that I got was $80,850,000. Now, there were several donations in there that didn’t list the amount (including a couple of endowed chairs, a fellowship, and a Trustee announcing they would be doubling their “previous donation” which I could not find), so the number most likely is at least $100 million from August 2011 to now.

ModernMan - Thank you! Where did you get the $2 billion number? Also, from what date are they officially starting the campaign? I thought they were only counting donations starting in August 2011.

EDIT: Okay, I found this article: http://uscnews.usc.edu/university/usc_announces_largest_fundraising_campaign_in_higher_education_history.html

With the goal of advancing its academic vision and priorities, USC will launch on Sept. 15 the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the history of higher education.
To date, the university has raised more than $1 billion toward the $6 billion goal

So they are counting donations from further back, but how far back if they only officially launched it in September?

Dream,

Raising funds in huge amounts for universities is usually a long process. There are aften lengthy negotiations between lawyers for both organizations. Foundations must work with tax issues and desires of the donors. Sometimes donors wish to give funds, art works, property or other valuable items. These may be donated in one year or over a period of time.

Often a huge campaign goes through a “silent” phase at the beginning. This phase may or may not be part of the campaign. Sometimes it is used to discover if the goal is attainable.

The most recent figure I have seen on university literature before the last donation of $5 million was $1.4 billion. There are donors who wish to remain anonymous and do not wish publicity. Many alumni have SC included in their wills. These numbers have not shown up at this time.

Dr. Nikias has high goals for the university. There are some optimists who believe he, along with the Board of Trustees, may raise the $6 billion before the campaign ends.

Dream,

Some loyal alumni donate sums monthly. I was doing some research on the Marshall School of Business recently. On the website was a thank you to donors who pledge $150,000 per year to the school. A long list of names was posted. It is not always donations of $7 or $10 million that help meet the goal, but also alumni and friends of SC who give monthly over a long period of time.

Memorial gifts are also a source of funds. There are hundreds of memorial scholarships named in honor of USC students or professors who are remembered in this way.

Alumni clubs across the nation raise funds for the university and alumni scholarships. Last year the USC Alumni Club of Atlanta earned enough to provide 5 scholarships. The USC Alumni Club of NYC raised funds through the “Tommy Awards” on Broadway to give 30 partial scholarships.

Just saw your posts - interesting! Any idea how far along the campaign is as of right now?

The last figure I heard mentioned was $1.7 BILLION. That is from an unofficial source. I read recently an alumnus will be donating millions toward the new swimming complex.

Commencement is in May. That might be an opportunity to announce another large donation.

Usually there is a large donation each month.

I project that we will get donations to fund the following:

1) Renovation of Heritage Hall
2) New Marshall Undergraduate Building
3) Interdisciplinary Arts Building
4) Money for USC Village
5) Renvoation of Expo Park and the Coliseum(when the negotiations and terms are completed)
6)Naming of the Theater. Social Work, and Arcitecture School.

They should probably build an actual theatre school building before naming it. :P

Interdisciplinary Arts Building! That would be amazing. My minor is one of the interdisciplinary ones and I have to run around campus eight times just to get proper advisement.

I have a feeling the interdisciplinary arts building is going to be located on the current student health center and possibly the religious life building.

The following is a list of capital projects Nikias mentioned in his address to the faculty. It touches on many other topics of USC ambitious plans and I strongly recommend reading it when you have a moment:

"We continue to carry out our Master Plan for infrastructure development, which will add 5.5 million square feet of space to both our campuses over the next 20 years.

On the University Park Campus, we await completion of the following buildings under construction:

the new University Club, at what used to be the Stoops Library;

the Engemann Student Health Center;

Phase 3 of our majestic Cinematic Arts complex; and,

the John McKay Center for athletics.

Across both campuses, major landscape and hardscape beautification programs continue, adding to the signature park-like USC setting. Our goal is to make both campuses oases of green and beauty! On the University Park Campus alone, we will plant 1,400 trees in the next few years.

This year we will also break ground on several new projects:

the Wallis Annenberg Hall for Journalism;

Verna and Peter Dauterive Hall, which will be the first interdisciplinary social sciences building on the USC campuses; and,

our extraordinary and historic Physical Education Building, which will undergo a major renovation.

We also have a number of projects in the serious planning phase:

a new building for the Marshall School of Business; and,

a new research building for the Dornsife and Viterbi Schools.

And for the Health Sciences Campus, we are seriously planning for:

an outpatient clinical building for the Norris Cancer Center;

new student housing for medical and Ph.D. students; and,

a major hotel.

A major initiative is the redevelopment of the University Village, which is currently in the planning phase. It will be the largest development project in the history of South Los Angeles. It will make USC an outstanding living environment for our students. And it will make USC the most inviting place possible, for faculty and staff and members of our neighborhood. The first phase will provide quality student housing, especially for graduate and professional students, and major retail services for the community.

We also are in the final stages of negotiating a master lease for the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. I believe that having a master lease would be in the best long-term interests of the university and the city of Los Angeles.

In this way, the Coliseum can be an asset for the entire region and for the nation. But for USC to accept a master lease, we will need to be given sufficient control over parking for the stadium. Let’s hope this works out."

[Annual Address to the USC Faculty | Office of the President](http://www.president.usc.edu/speeches/annual-address-to-the-usc-faculty-2/)

Now if only they could get busy finally tearing down the Lot and putting something useful there…

At the end of February an anonymous donor gave $13.3 million and today the announcement was made of a gift by the Harman Foundation of $10 million.

Donations were received recently which added up to about $20 million from various sources. Last week a gift of $1 million was donated to the Institute of Urology by Carl and Mary Robertson.

A Mary Rony Memorial Scholarship was established to be awarded to a graduate student who excels in the new Masters of Liberal Sciences program.

The Rose Family Foundation has established the Rose Family Fellowships to be given to two outstanding students per year in the USC School of Cinematic Arts. These will be awarded in the Interactive Media Division. The students will be called Rose Foundation Fellows.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Neithart have donated $1,150,000 to the Keck School of Medicine’s Department of Neurological Surgery.

Does anyone know why they are tearing up the street in front of Tommy Trojan?

Just improving the landscape and pavement.

^should be finished before Term starts. :)

The area surrounding the statue of “Tommy Trojan” on three sides is Hahn Plaza. The northeast corner will be extended to create a wide square area. The entire suface will be repaved in brick.

The plaza’s fountain, Shumway Fountain, has been redesigned to become a more prominent feature of the remodeled square. At the edge of Hahn Plaza the Traveler statue will have a small green space surrounding the base.

It is hoped the area renovation will be completed by the end of August.
