FASET Review

I'll be attending FASET this Wednesday and I just wanted to know what the first group of students thought about it. Any comments, concerns, and tips for the next sessions?

Thanks

I thought that it was a very high-quality event. The first day, you spend a lot of time in assigned ~10 person groups with a Faset leader and do stuff. I lucked out and got a really good leader (he wasn’t fakely peppy, didn’t make us do really awkward game things, and was cool but not too cool for us if that makes sense) and all the introduction stuff wasn’t too awkward, even with GT students involved.

There were speeches given by GT admins in a theater that were the meat and potatoes of the orientation and were boring but helpful. One of the talks was given by current students about GT traditions and ended in a group of band members actually playing our delightfully PG fight songs, was a great touch and was way cooler than if they had just played a recording.

The social thing at night was definitely the highlight of the whole thing in terms of pure fun. It took place at the awesome Campus Recreation Center (built for and used by the Olympics, a fact that GT presentations will make sure you don’t forget) and they did a good job of making it very unstructured. I chose to play basketball the whole time and had a lot of fun. My real ‘holy crap I’m not in high school anymore’ moment came when I was going to get a ball that had rolled next to a window (the courts are at the top of the CRC) and looked out to and saw midtown and downtown Atlanta at night, and realizing that that is where I’m going to…live. Very cool and slightly surreal. It was pretty romantic to be cliche, the little wave of pride, trepidation, and excitement.

The only time that you’re actually in your dorm is when you go to sleep at the end of Day 1, and like any college dorms they suck. Also, they are unbearably cold. Do not neglect the blanket that they give you (by the time that I had realized how cold it was, my roommate was asleep and I hadn’t unwrapped my blanket and didn’t want to make a lot of noise) and I would probably bring sweatpants.

The course registration and advisement was extremely well done and efficient. They have you go into an advisement session with the other people in your major with an official adviser and current students- I got great one-on-one advice that was genuinely helpful. And during the actual course registration they have a student helper hold your hand through the process to avoid any screwups, and they do it very quickly.

Were you able to get the courses that you wanted? Of not what did you miss out on?

I got the important ones- CS, MSE 1111, and Calc, but English 2 and Health were already full. I got Chem 2 as a placeholder to make me full-time, I’ll probably test out of it (getting a 5 on AP Chem lets you potentially skip both Chem 1 and Chem 2, you have to take a placement test to skip Chem 2) if English and health open up.

So from what I gathered, don’t expect to get classes that aren’t enormous in size (English 2 had class sizes of like 13 people) and often taken by second years. I bet health is full from 2nd, 3rd, 4th years who had put it off and need to take it, leaving little room for first semester freshman.

According to GT, a 5 on AP Chem gives you credit for Chem 1310. WHich means I can jump straight into CHEM 1315 Survey of Organic Chemistry.
I’m a mom and I just got back from day 1 of my son’s FASET. IMO there were a lot of pretty girls at FASET. I just thought you guys might want to know that.:)

^ I greatly look forward to awkwardly trying to impress them in the CRC

Was a great experience!
The dorm room was freakishly cold, so watch out for that!

^Did you do Rats on Ropes? If you did you must have met my son. He said there weren’t that many kids there but he had a good time.

I live 7 hours away from GT, so I opted to pass on Rats on Ropes.
