I've been given conflicting info abt. GT's FASET orientation. The FASET website says that it isn't required for any students (international freshmen like me included), but when I e-mailed the admissions office, they told me that it was mandatory. Does anyone know what the truth of the matter is? I really don't want to spend 180 bucks on orientation unless it's required...

It’s not mandatory but you are missing out on both a great experience and tons of excellent information. The majority of students will attend faset. Also, if you live 900+ miles away then you can enroll in the last faset and stay on campus until fall semester starts a few days later.

It isn’t mandatory, the most important thing is registration for courses. However, you can also register during Phase 2.

I went to FASET and ended up ditching about 95% of it.

wait why’d you ditch a lot of it? Is it just a lot of boring useless info?

I went to the morning orientation speech and it was awful and poorly planned. It was pretty boring, I came from East Cobb, and had spent a lot of time at Tech before. My group ended up being mostly people I already knew, so I just went on my own to visit clubs I knew were meeting during the summer (I caught them on Skiles beforehand and asked to come by), met my random roommate, had some food, etc. I think going around on my own was much better than being taken to set activities, but to each their own.

I registered on my own the next day because FASET just determines when your time ticket opens, you don’t actually have to get a walkthrough done. If you come to tech, you should be able to figure out how to register if you click enough ;)

IMO FASET isn’t important. You can figure most of the things out on your own and like the above poster mentioned, the main point is to register for classes which isn’t really difficult.

I did FASET last year with two friends whom also got accepted and we all agreed that it wasn’t worth the time or money.
