FASFA 2010-2011

I was wondering my parents only need the taxes from the year before correct?
So if im filing for 2010-2011 i would just need 2009 taxes for them right?

You need the 2009 taxes for this year’s FAFSA. But that’s all over the FAFSA website.

I mean would they need 2008 or 2007 taxes or just 2009?

Just 2009.

If you are trying to get the Fafsa in this week (which is a good idea), you do have the option of using the 2008 numbers. You would do this, submit the FAFSA, wait for parents to complete the 2009 taxes and then go back and amend the FAFSA with the correct numbers.

This can work well if your family has been pretty consistent from one year to the next (same job, about the same pay, no big financial changes). This gets your material in at an early date – many colleges work through fin aid applications IN THE ORDER RECEIVED.

I amended our FAFSA eight times the first year. It’s no big deal. You don’t want to wait until April 15 (when taxes are due) to do the FAFSA. Many schools want the FAFSA by Feb 1 or Feb 15. If you have to use 2008 numbers and estimate, then do so.

Please tell your parents that many families have the parents (not the students) fill out the FAFSA. That’s because we are much more familiar with parental finances! You may need some help from them . . .
Good luck

Just 2009 taxes for the 2010-2011 FAFSA. (If you were doing the 2009-2010 FAFSA you would need 2008 taxes.)
