If I applied to more than one college and I received a star next to my FASFA EFC (meaning verification) do I have to complete verification for all the colleges?

And if one college makes any changes to the EFC will it correct it for all the other colleges?

What I am realizing is that verification might not be completed until April and then I will have 2 weeks or so to make a decision. Does this sound right?

Yes, you will have to complete verification for all colleges. If one college makes an update, depending on how they process it, it can change the EFC at all colleges that are listed on that FAFSA transaction. Check with each school’s financial aid office regarding their verification requirements. If you complete verification in a timely manner, you should have a final award letter in time to make your decision.

So, once I get verified from my #1 school choice I just tell the other schools I don’t want to go and stop verification or don’t verify with them?

Just curious since I am new to this…was the star next to the EFC when you completed the FAFSA online? or did the college you applied to put a star (meaning verification) next to your EFC???

The star is on the SAR. Schools can also choose to verify students even if their FAFSA was not selected by the processor - those schools will let the student know.

If you choose not to attend a school, you do not have to complete verification. Of course, if you will need to compare offers from schools, you will need to have completed verification first (or the offer could change based on verification - and some schools will remove institutional aid if you don’t complete verification by a certain point in time).

Kelsmom: Thanks so much for the help! I cant afford to send my D to certain colleges if the dislocated worker is not approved for the first year. Will the colleges verify the dislocated worker status at the same time as the rest of the fasfa, so I will have ample time to decide?

I am assuming dislocated worker is always verified.

Thank you. I was self employed in 2012 and nothing in 2013, but my concern is more of the timing of verification. I don’t want my D in classes or a week before school starts to do this specific verification. I believe they do this specific verification just before the pell grant is disbursed which could be too late/risky. I am not sure. I am hoping they verify in feb/march.

Dislocated worker status is not one of the items that is required to be verified. Schools may choose to do so, but they do not have to - they would only “have to” if they had reason to doubt your claim. It is a good idea to ask the schools what, if anything, they will request.

Well the school sent a letter requesting Student Documentation of income worksheet before they will release any financial aid award. This is a fasfa only school and not css profile. I was not selected for fasfa verification on my SAR. I am assuming any benefit we received under dislocated worker is going to be removed when we show unearned income on the worksheet. It seems the schools are doing this to circumvent using the css profile, which i think is unfair. Is the school using the correct form?

Schools can ask for documentation for any reason. For whatever reason, your FAFSA was selected, and you need to provide the requested documentation. Nothing will be changed that isn’t supposed to be changed.

“I am assuming any benefit we received under dislocated worker is going to be removed when we show unearned income on the worksheet.” Not sure what this means. All income has to be reported unless it is specifically exempted (such as SSDI).

Thanks for the info. When your a dislocated worker and you qualify for zero efc…assets and all unearned income is not reported on FAFSA. FAFSA only looks at “earned” income from work. Therefore someone with SSDI and Veterans can still qualify for federal aid (with dislocated worker). My concern is some schools will not issue grant aid after seeing these unearned income figures. Since unearned income is not on the FAFSA for dislocated worker and zero efc the unearned income shouldn’t be verified. The schools already have the income taxes. Now this form wants detail explanation of all monthly expenses and all income (earned and unearned). I hope I am making sense.

You are making sense. The schools do have the right to ask any questions they choose. Just provide, them with the information. Your eligibility for federally funded aid is based in your FAFSA EFC. That won’t change (unless you made an error). BUT schools using this information to award their own institutional aid are well within their rights to ask questions about your income, especially if it doesn’t appear that you can support yourselves on the income reported.
