IF we were selected for verification, how and when would we be notified? How long does it take for the verification to be done? I am sure everything we submitted on the FAFSA and CSS Profile was accurate, but if we are selected and an error is found which would increase our EFC, I would want to have that information BEFORE a final decision is made on which college my daughter will attend (May 1). Thanks!

It doesn’t work that way. You get verified when the college gets around to doing it. For us, it was during the spring semester of the following year so it was almost a year after submitting the FAFSA.

I was selected for verification by the Dept of Ed on 2/23. All docs were provided tpo the school on the same day and signed off today. I was just notified that my daughters file is complete and our financial aid package has been processed. Let us pray… :)

proudparent22- Can I ask when you filed your FAFSA? We did ours Feb. 7 and haven’t heard from any colleges asking for verification. How did you find out you were selected for verification–email? When you are selected, is it for every school applied to, or just certain schools that want the verification? Thanks again

I think the schools are required by federal regulations to verify a certain percentage of all students who apply for financial aid - it checks your FAFSA for accuracy. From my experience, the school will notify you of a verification request by mail or e-mail (or both) and rather quickly. They request copies of the parent’s W-2s and 1040, as well as those of the student. In addition, there is a Department of Education form.I’ve seen percentages between 15%- 30% and apparently, its primarily requested of students qualifying for the Pell grant. Oh, and my daughter received a request from only one of the schools she’s looking at. Hope this helps.

You can be selected by the Dept of Ed or by the school so the notification and requirements can vary. The reasons can be random selection, or incomplete, contradictory or estimated information. I thought I read on a recent thread that an asterisk by the name on the fafsa report may mean this. Guessing that would be the Dept of Ed random selection. Sorry I don’t remember which thread. Maybe someone else can verify this. Thanks proudparent for letting us know it can go quickly and well.

I submitted FAFSA on 2/15 for one kid, 2/21 for the other (because she LOST her W2 and I couldn’t finish it with her!). I received an email from one of the schools (W&M) listed on 2/28 asking for federal taxes from both parents and student as well as copies of W2. I faxed all same day. Another school already had a general requirement for taxes and W2’s (UVA) so, I didn’t wait for them to ask, just send to secure fax number.

I have heard nothing at all from any of the other schools listed and there were almost a dozen. Our EFC for that child was 00202, other kid was 00000. It could lend credence to the theory that “Verification is required for all Pell Grant possibles” statement. I am hoping our EFCs will get us at least a Pell Grant for each kid!! But, I am new to this so I know nothing until I know something.

lynnmo, Im the other half of proudparent22. We completed the FAFSA at midnight on Jan 1st. We were notified by the school via email that we were chosen for verification by the Dept of Education. Today, just out of curiousity I checked the other school portals and noticed that only 1 other school had posted a new “to do” list for the same verification documents (although we were not contacted via email). Yesterday I received an email from FAFSA stating the school had verified our documentation and our EFC & Pell Grant amount remains unchanged. I need to call FAFSA Monday to see if I need to continue the verification process with the other school as well or is our case now considered closed. Hope this helps…

Whether you are verified or not depends on each school. The school can choose to verify you when FAFSA does not show you as having being selected. it can also choose to not verify you when FAFSA shows you as having been selected. it is completely at the discretion of each school. (we have had both these scenarios happen)

Each school is required to verify 30% of the FAFSAs they process. Once they have hit the 30% they do not have to verify any more. Some schools choose to verify more than 30%. Again, that is completely up to the school. In general schools do not want you to submit verification documentation unless they have requested it. If you do submit it unasked, then they are required to go through the verification process even though they did not select you.

Not true at all. My kids get the Pell. There have been years they have been verified and other years they have not.

I suspect it may be more likely you will be selected with a low EFC. But certainly it is not required. And I know of one poster here who said they were selected every year even though they never qualified for a dime of need based aid.

shyanne said, “It doesn’t work that way. You get verified when the college gets around to doing it. For us, it was during the spring semester of the following year so it was almost a year after submitting the FAFSA.”

Did you not receive aid then for your for your first semester?

We got an email from fafsa about a week after we submitted it online saying we were selected for verification, but we haven’t heard from any of the schools about verification yet. Should we contact at least the school my daughter most wants to attend to see what they need us to send to expedite the verification process, or should we wait to be contacted?

Actually I don’t remember which year it was they reviewed our financial aid and what my son got each year.

I do remember that I noticed the big public university my son goes to all of a sudden reviewed the financial aid for over a week but never asked for info from us. They had it marked on his financial aid page that they were reviewing it. I figured that was the verification. They didn’t change anything.

Schools need to set up their systems for next year, and many are just getting things in place. We just started bringing in FAFSA’s and requesting verification documents within the last week or so. Keep watching your student portals. Some schools may not request any documents, while others may.

Interesting tidbit for 2012-13: Beginning in 12-13, ED will request that schools verify certain items on individual FAFSA’s, rather than just selecting them for the general verification with which we are familiar. The item to be verified may be taxes paid, number in college, whatever. Schools will actually be required to do that verification (with the exception of some schools that are in a special ED program that allows them to select their own student population for verification). But that is NEXT year.

I was just on one of my D’s school portals and noticed that they are requesting tax info and W2s etc., the request was dated 3/3. We have not received a letter or email about it so I contacted the school and they said we would get an email from IDOC telling us what to submit…and if we don’t have it by Friday to call them back. We had already submitted that info to IDOC for 2 other schools and am just curious why this school doesn’t have access to it.

I thought we were in the clear since we had not heard from any of the schools…wishful thinking!! ha ha

We had submitted all our info to IDOC for one school. Then I realized that another of her prospective schools also uses IDOC. I went onto her IDOC account and noticed the 2nd school was listed there (added since originally sending IDOC our docs for the 1st school). You could check your IDOC account and maybe you’ll see that the other school is now listed as having the ability to see your docs.

I just checked and the 3rd school isn’t listed. I’ll keep checking and maybe they will show up!
