Fashion Mistakes That Make You Look Older

This came across my Twitter feed. An article with a similar title.

In the article these were the “fashion mistakes” they claim make you look older:

  • too many pastel outfits
  • too much black
  • baggy everything
  • out of date glasses
  • the wrong lingerie
  • out of date and too many new trends
  • fast fashion
  • matching accessories

Do any of these apply to you? Do you have more to add? Do you disagree with any of the 8 listed???

Added by respondents:
Bad haircut

Baggy capris

Uncared for teeth

Clothes that don’t fit your current body shape

Don’t know why “out of date” and “too many new trends” are in the same statement.

I don’t lean towards pastels. If I’m adding color it’s probably more vibrant. But I also mix color with black.

I’m sure I could use some updated “lingerie” as in, more proper bra fitting. At the same time, I’m not looking for undergarments to fully change my look! I want them generally effective on top and comfortable on the bottom. No body sucking garments for me.

Add to the “this makes you look older” list!

I don’t wear many pastels at all. I am fair skinned with blonde hair and blue eyes and pastels have always washed me out so I shy away from them. I will add to the list that a bad haircut can make you look older. I do like to have my hair cut and colored by a stylist that keeps up with current trends, but also knows that women my age want a haircut that brings out the best in them and not a cookie cutter “older lady” cut.

Too much black?? That’s fashion heresy!

One very specific fashion choice that I think makes a person look older: capris that are not closely fitted (especially when combined with sneakers).

I would love to wear capris but they just do not look good on me. I wear “jewel” colors because they look better than pastels on me.

I don’t worry much about fashion since we work from home and live in Maine. It’s pretty laid-back here, thank goodness. When I go home to Texas, I feel underdressed most of the time.

So when my belt and watch strap both match my shoes that makes me look old?

I’m fine with “old” then.

@MaineLonghorn - try some cropped jeans versus capris and you will probably find these look good on you.

For the guys… Wearing shorts with higher socks… Just don’t :joy:

I’ll TRY to update the first post to “mistakes” added in through the thread.

If you don’t care about fashion or looking decent or whatever is related to this thead, that’s fine! You do you! (hate that phrase) But thought this would be fun discussion for people to get ideas on changes to make or changes they have made or to add or subtract from the list!

(I’m not sure I’m going to be able to keep editing - there may be a limit on edits to a post. I did not add “being out of shape” - I don’t want to bring weight into the subject/discussion BUT did add ill-fitting clothes for current body shape)!

I’m not sure anyone would know what lingerie I was wearing to judge me, lol but whatever. I agree with the glasses and maybe ill fitting ( baggy ) clothes. Totally agree with @showmom858 regarding haircut/color…
In addition I would add yellow teeth, bad posture, being out of shape - I think all of these make one appear older perhaps than they are. I try to take care of my health more than staying fashionable although I do like clothes/shoes/accessories but it’s a lot to keep up with!

I also think there is a way of dressing or accessorizing that is NOT changing your look every 2 years or whatever. Keeping your wardrobe a little fresh as well as your hair and such - or wearing classic pieces or pieces that FIT - goes a long way to looking like you care.

I see that @abasket is also replying and we may post the same thing.

An ill fitting bra is very aging.

It’s something people are into or not. I’m aware of fashion and trends. I like reading about fashion and follow blogs. I like to be classically trendy. Timeless fashion.

But I’m not a slave to fashion either. Comfortable shoes are my jam.

I see lots of fashion mistakes but it probably doesn’t bother that person one bit.

Women my age and a few years older do not like the way they look in shorts. They refuse to wear them and it puts them as a certain age. But that’s ok, wear what works for you.

Too dark of a hair color.

But in the end, everyone gets older and that’s ok. I try to dress in a way that makes me happy. But I’ll never be confused for my daughter and I don’t want that either. I know people who do.

I’ve always been a shorts person - and def still wear them at almost 63. They are not shorty short but they are not bermudas. BUT what I wear more now and I love, are skorts. A lot of athleisure skorts. Not too short, not too long, a little swingy - I think they are ok for my body and look sporty.

mascara on lower lids
baggy clothes, especially pants that are old lady with stretch band backs (not the yoga ones)
purses (I’m sure that one will be controversial)

For the record- H and I are late 60-70’s and wear shorts all summer long. Way too hot for pants.

The biggest fashion mistake: trying to hold onto youth.

This!

I had my first bra fitting (ever) about 6-7 years ago at Nordstrom and it made a big difference (I was in the wrong size for one thing).

As for too many pastels: I was hiking with S recently and noticed I was probably the oldest person hiking in that location. Until I saw another woman who was clearly older than me (I’m 65). But when I got closer I noticed that she was definitely my age or even younger. But she was wearing baggy pastel capris and a baggy pastel top. My S even commented later.

I really don’t care what other people wear but some looks are very aging.

A friend sent a pic when she visited another friend. All 3 of us are the same age. I asked my daughter “Do I look this old?” (very catty of me). I thought it was because they’d both let their hair grow out grey during the pandemic, but D said it was because they had too much make up, especially lipstick, on.

I have to agree. They looked ‘daytime’ old.

As I have gotten older I find that makeup is harder to figure out. I still wear mascara on both my top and lower lashes since my eyes and my long lashes are one of the assets on my face. I still haven’t found any great concealer to cover the dark circles under my eyes yet. I don’t wear makeup daily (at most 3 times a week), but would appreciate any makeup advice you all have.

@rockymtnhigh2 - I only carry small stylish crossbody bags as a purse. When I’m wearing shorts or athleisure wear I have a couple of small backpacks or fanny packs (not worn around my waist) that I carry.

Depending on how many wrinkles you have, concealer could look terrible!! (Speaking as someone who’s always had circles under her eyes, now with wrinkles!). In my 20’s I used concealer, now at 60, I haven’t for the last 10 years or so.

Too much makeup is SUPER aging!
