I probably would define it as trying to look 25+ years younger than your age. A lot of cosmetic surgery falls under this category.
I don’t think there are that many fashion “don’ts”. If it looks good, wear it!! And if it doesn’t look good, wear it anyway if you want to!
But accept and embrace that we are all aging. I decided in my 20s I wasn’t going to be one of those women anguished at the passing years – I was going to be happy about them, and so grateful I have the chance to have wrinkly skin, sun spots, etc, because my friends who died in their 40s and 50s never had that chance.
You may want to first apply a color correcter, such as the Pixi by Petra Correction Concentrate in Brightening Peach (depending on your coloring). Let it set for a while before applying a concealer later.
For my under eye area, the concealer I use is Lancome Teint Idole. It’s not too heavy a texture. I use a little blurring powder (Honest Beauty Invisible Blurring Loose Powder) on top.
I also use a different concealer, from Dermablend, for some discoloration on my face. That one is a little thicker in consistency.
One of the biggest helps for me has been purchasing a concealer brush - this one by BK Beauty has been a game changer:
Thanks for explaining further. But I’m also thinking now….what can’t I wear that say a 42 year old would wear?? (That would be 20 years difference for me)
You can wear what a 42 year old would wear, if you loved it and it looked good on you. But if you wore it because you were trying really hard to look 42, then – imho – that doesn’t work so well.
Dressing too young. Booty shorts with a crop top. Leggings with a short shirt. Only the young can get away with that look.
Here in the upper Midwest, I see lots of Velcro shoes. Teva and Chaco’s are popular with all ages. Now SAS shoes will be aging
Not too tight or too loose. I personally am not a fan of shirts with air brushed cats on them.
My husband is not a good dresser and he doesn’t care at all.
But leggings and joggers all day, every day. With anything but a crop top.
I’ll have to compile my favorite blogs but I figured out that I dropped reading the blogs and just follow people on Instagram instead.
Parisians in Paris, fun
Style at a certain age, older style blogger
The Mom Edit, younger, trendy not cheap crap
Hi Sugarplum, TX I think she’s 49. Bright colors
JillGG, neutral basics
I’m about to turn 60 and I think my age finally caught up with my fashion.
Also, yes to shorts a few inches above my knee and I look forward to retiring and wearing sneakers every single day. I’ve posted the same in another thread, but I have really really hard to fit feet.
Since we have a “sister thread” and I don’t want to barge in that one (stay in your own lane, abasket! ) I DO want to say that there is plenty of middle ground between wanting to look good/fashionable and not caring. Also staying in fashion does not need to be a money dump.
I may carry a $130 purse but I got it at TJ Maxx for $50. I limit the # of clothing pieces in my closet. I don’t wear much make up at all and don’t apply skin care products besides Aveeno but I have pretty decent coloring due to heritage and spending a fair amount of time outdoors. I can count on one hand the time I’ve worn high heels (more than 2 inches?) and don’t own a single pair now.
Their is top tier, bottom tier and lots of tiers in between!!!
I hate wearing shorts or skirts because of my legs - even though I am not really overweight, my calves are not thin (thick peasant lower legs and big feet!!). I wear a lot of ankle pants and some cropped. I used to wear capris, but they really don’t look good because of where they fall.
The hair color is a challenge. My natural hair color is dark brown almost black. My colorist was coloring it somewhat lighter, but it would quite quickly become red and stringy. I went darker and am really much happier, but wonder if it makes me look older. Don’t think so. It actually still turns reddish, but a nicer shade.
Only wear leggings for walking. But definitely wear a lot of black.
This thread reminded me of a post from a blogger I follow. She generally has sensible suggestions and I have found some good work ensembles from her blog.
Merrick’s Art is another blogger who’s content I enjoy. She’s a Morman mother of young boys, she does a lot of video. She’s pretty classic in her dress and has a lot of good tips.
This is the thing about blogs and influencers. They are selling stuff, selling their lifestyle. I like to see how they put things together.
For instance, Jill GG, lives in the Midwest and is the mom to 2 teenagers. She posts new trends but lots of neutrals. And some of the same stuff so if you have classic pieces, you have the basics. But she’s posting new stuff for links to make money. It’s her job, it’s their job. And it pays well.
