Fat America Throws Out Enough Food to Feed Poor Countries?

Andrew Martin's Sunday Week in Review story on wasted food, "One Country's Table Scraps, Another Country's Meal," was beefed up with a headline loaded against America's apparently profligate and wasteful eating habits and a photo illustration of all the food the average family of four throws out in a month, in the shape of the United States. But the story itself shows (eventually) that other countries waste just as much food.

Grocery stores discard products because of spoilage or minor cosmetic blemishes. Restaurants throw away what they don’t use. And consumers toss out everything from bananas that have turned brown to last week’s Chinese leftovers. In 1997, in one of the few studies of food waste, the Department of Agriculture estimated that two years before, 96.4 billion pounds of the 356 billion pounds of edible food in the United States was never eaten. Fresh produce, milk, grain products and sweeteners made up two-thirds of the waste. An update is under way.

After President Bush said recently that India’s burgeoning middle class was helping to push up food prices by demanding better food, officials in India complained that not only do Americans eat too much -- if they slimmed down to the weight of middle-class Indians, said one, “many people in sub-Saharan Africa would find food on their plate” -- but they also throw out too much food.

^ lol i can't believe our own president said that

A more recent study by the Environmental Protection Agency estimated that Americans generate roughly 30 million tons of food waste each year, which is about 12 percent of the total waste stream. All but about 2 percent of that food waste ends up in landfills; by comparison, 62 percent of yard waste is composted.

The problem isn’t unique to the United States.

and here i am complaining about a food crisis lol

so, everyone out there, EAT EVERYTHING ON YOUR PLATE!

wow you are seriously AOM’s disciple…

And no thanks, I’ll pass on the asparagus and broccoli. Oh god forbid I eat them.

I LOVE MCDONALDS!!! put a smile on, put a smile on, everybody come on, put a smile on.

^ shut upp..(invoyable)

we all take advantage of the food on our plate, don’t we?

lol mcdonalds, that reminds me of the song “your so gay” where the lyrics from one part goes “your so sad you could use a happy meal” or something lolol

Yeah, I was like, “Why she say that to me?”
lol

…LOL.

I’m starting to wish this forum had a “Rolls eyes” emoticon. A lot.

oh god you seriously crack me up, Mr. Stalin. Congratulations.

^ you’re really spamming our threads..

you don’t contribute constructively in here

Oh God, who is this ■■■■■?

hahahhaaha, you’re comical at best stalin.

Why do I get the feeling that AOM and asian sensation are essentially the same person?

L.O.L.

Dude, you’re pure genius…

I’ve been wondering if they are the same…

And I think Stalin was banned, btw.

But back to the op, American’s eating less food would not ensure that people in the Sahara would have more food…

^ no, im NOT AOM!!!

stop with this nonsense…

gosh, now i have to think of ways to prove that i’m not AOM…

it’s not that the food won’t go to the sahara, it’s just that wastage itself is counter-productive. we still shouldn’t waste because it’s the risk that that availability of food will decrease, and since food isn’t something that can never run out, it’s better to use it wisely and not take it for granted. what we could not waste to increase its availability for future uses is something that we are…and with things like overpopulation, global warming, and oil problems, we don’t need food to be marked off as a world concern…

So what do you think of me?

^ YOU should be called AOM’s disciple. I’ll gladly hand over that label to you any day

=D

(oh, and contribute your thoughts to this discussion as so this thread won’t look like an utter waste (: )

I think I’m in a category all by myself, especially with all those nasty and wise ass remarks.

So anyway…

If those Africans held fair elections, built some decent roads, stop mass murdering each other with machetes, etc. Then I think we might actually transport some food there.

…(can you really call that contributing? ><)

we should be more politically involved in the african genocidal problems..darfur, congo, rwanda, etc..

i sort of miss the political activism america had during the vietnam war. when i learned about it, i sort of wish students were like that todayy, especially with such growing concerns

Nah, kids these days are too materialistic and self-centered to care about the world around them.

It happened again! Amazing. I must be a h4x0r or something, yeah?
