Which one is better? I haven’t applied to them yet but I think I’ll get accepted to either one. 4.6 weighted GPA, 1490 sat/ 23 act. 200 volunteer hours.

I just made the same thread, but I’m stuck in the same boat as you. They both seem similar academic wise, but I think FIU is in the better location and has the better campus. It’s a baby compared to other universities but advancing pretty quickly.

Yeah that’s true. Plus in a couple of years FIU will be at UCF level if not higher. FAU is nice as well though. But Miami is a bigger cities with more connections.

What are you looking to major?

i would definitely go to FIU. I’ve visited it a few times and the faculty and students are very kind and welcoming. It has a beautiful campus and I believe it to be academically better than FAU. Also, FIU has more recognition from those outside of Florida.

That’s where I plan to go actually! But I’m going to save money and go to a state college first.

I’d like to go on the other side and say FAU. Where I’m from, FAU is considered better than FIU so I think it’s based on where you live. Also, I believe the area of FIU isn’t for everyone (it certainly wasn’t for me and was one of the big reasons I chose to apply to FAU instead) and of course, neither is FAU (you’ll have to visit to find out for yourself). BUT, I will say when I went to FAU, the faculty there made me feel very welcome and made us believe it was getting better and better each year.

I think that it depends on your major and eventual career aspirations. Personally I feel that both are pretty equal academically.

FIU has stronger programs with either an international or creative emphasis. Being in Miami, you will find a lot of opportunities to gain experience in both areas. At FIU, your classmates will be from all over the world. The atmosphere is academically challenging; but more supportive than what you would find at UM.

FAU is a good choice for those who are looking to remain in Southeast FL to work. It’s older than FIU and it seems to have a stronger alumni network in the area. Great arts and science programs. Large population of South Florida locals and a sizable African/Caribbean student population (while FIU is more Hispanic).

Both schools seem to change by leaps and bounds every decade. I feel that both are lacking when it comes to overall college experience. Lots of commuting students and lots of local branch campuses (of both) cut into campus cohesiveness. And of course, if you are looking for sports and extracurriculars, you’re better off going to UF or even USF for that matter.

Academically they are very comparable; it really depends program-by-program. For instance, FAU’s recent class of accounting graduates had 100% job placement, we’re the birthplace of ocean engineering and we have very strong nursing, pre-med and Education programs. FIU may be stronger in some other places, again, depends on the program.

I think they’re different climates, too. FIU has more of a Latino culture, FAU has more of a beach/country club culture. Miami has more nightlife and tourism, but also has more “big city” problems like traffic, crime, etc. Boca Raton is a safe, manicured city with great restaurants but nightlife and tourism is lacking compared to Miami.

FAU has the better sports teams and better football stadium too, FWIW :P
