Well, saw how on rotten tomatoes they recently surveyed big name actors and directors about their favorite 5 movies. Bored, so I decided to make a HSL thread on it. What are your favorite 5 movies HSL? Try and diversify the genres if possible. Add commentary if you really want

For me...

American Beauty
Kevin Spacey is brilliant. The movie is a piece of art and thought. What is beautiful? :D

Goodwill Hunting
Matt Damon is a boss. An original and compelling storyline that actively brings you in

Reservoir Dogs
So many memorable scenes, just so *tarantino/i

Se7en
My detective/thriller movie of choice

Paranormal Activity Series
My scary movie(s) of choice. I like this series cause it's scary without doing the whole "gore to the extreme" or "sudden camera angle change and burst of sound". In fact, there is no music at all.

Some honorable mentions: oldboy (ultraviolent thriller of choice), the prestige (for its complexity), hurt locker/saving private ryan (for my favorite war movies),

It’s A Wonderful Life

To Save A Life

A Beautiful Mind

Elf

A French movie I saw a couple years ago that I can’t remember the name of!

The Princess Bride. Action, romance, humor; it’s got everything.

Up. I love the idea, and I want to have Kevin and Doug as my pets. Plus, the beginning part makes me cry almost every time.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. I love '80’s movies, and this is my favorite. The scene where he sings “twist and shout” on the parade float is the coolest thing ever. I wish my life was like this. But sadly, John Hughes did not direct my life.

Pride and Prejudice (the one with Keira Knightley as Elizabeth). I think it was really well done, and it portrays one of my favorite books almost exactly as I pictured it. I also love the music.

Easy A. I think this movie rocks. It’s funny without having to resort to dumb gross jokes and situations like a lot of comedies about high school. I totally relate to Olive, and I think a lot of other people do too.

Closely Watched Trains - perfect mix of comedy and tragedy, innocence and malevolence. Incredible movie in every way.

Metropolis - perhaps still the vastest film ever made, it’s like steampunk Shakespeare

Excalibur - To me, it puts every other drama, let alone King Arthur movie, to shame.

Star Wars - One of the most quotable movies in history with a delicate reminder of the real world amongst all the drama

Yellow Submarine - imo better than any of the Beatles’ music, it’s just a hilarious and quirky escapade with loveable characters

Lulz, what would be the exact definition of the word? Beautifully artistic violence?

This movie annoys me so much. Let’s criticize Christianity with ridiculous strawmen. Let’s have a movie about teenage sexuality, but at the end of our movie, our heroine must still be a virgin because otherwise it would be liek ttly evil. Oh, and does anyone actually go to a school where the entire student body cares so much about one girl losing her virginity?

I can’t believe that I STILL haven’t seen either of these two movies.

Honorable Mentions: The King’s Speech (my favorite historical movie, ever :p), The Proposal (Rom-coms are my guilty pleasure) and the Five People You Meet in Heaven (Really makes you think )

Spirited Away- When I first saw this movie, I was blown away. It just pulls you so into the story. The pacing, the characters, everything is just perfect.

Big Fish- I am a big fan of surrealism, so that is how this movie got this places. It definitely has flaws, but I love its sense of creativity and the boundaries it makes between the real and the imaginary. The ending always gets to me.

Wall-e- My favorite of all the Pixar films (Even though I love all of them with an exception of Cars), but this one was just once again was breath-taking. It felt so scary, while real at the same time. I was in tears by the end Dx

Forest Gump- A powerful yet charming movie. It just catches your heart at the beginning of the story and makes you want to watch for the rest of the ride. In addition, Gump is one of best characters, an innocent character who makes the best of what comes his way. A movie that both makes you think and grow close to the characters, one of the best.

Howl’s Moving Castle- This is the only movie I have managed to watch 10 times I love it. A story of both of magic and wonder, my favorite movie.

The sound of music 4. 3idiots. My favorite indian movie. 3. Kuch kuch hota hai 2. Miss congeniality 1. Drumline i also love the step up movies.

Death Proof

The Devil Wears wears Prada.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Ratatouille

Avatar

I’m a movie buff, so I have far too many… but to name a few in no particular order…

Lawrence of Arabia

The Maltese Falcon

Lord of the Rings (all of them)

The Shawshank Redemption

It’s a Wonderful Life

HarryJones, you need to see them NOWWWWW haha. That said, there’s so much I need to see. 400 Blows, Seven Samurai, The Seventh Seal, Bicycle Thieves, are at the top of my list. Also, I should probably watch Citizen Kane and The Breakfast Club again

1) Manhattan (I LOVE WOODY ALLEN)
2) The Silence of the Lambs (one of the creepiest films ever made)
3) Lost in Translation (Bill Murray is so insanely versatile… compare this to, e.g., Ghostbusters)
4) Black Swan (hyper-stylish nightmare vision with cool ballet sequences)
5) Alien (soooo much dread in this movie–the atmosphere aboard the Nostromo is incredibly dark)

Here are my 5, although they’re not in any order, if they’re in the same genre that’s fair, but in different genres I think that’s like comparing apples and oranges.

-Harry Potter Series (if I have to pick a favorite, the Prisoner of Azkaban)
-V for Vendetta
-Slumdog Millionaire
-The Butterfly Effect
-Dodgeball

Hmm why do people like a beautiful mind so much? I thought the production was amazing but two things bothered me: (1) the ending was unsatisfying, felt like the film led me to expect something more profound and complex, (2) the marriage was unrealistic, why would a hot chick marry him and stay with him even through his twisted mental tantrums lol
