Hey guys! I know this probably isn't the most exciting topic ever, but help me out here please!
So basically I faxed over my 1040, my dad's 1040, and another student paper like FSU had asked.
I received an e-mail the same day saying the papers were denied. Is it because I faxed them? I am 100% sure they were the correct papers.
What makes me a little anxious is that I haven't even been accepted yet but they are asking for these
papers.

When I call, I am on hold for like 20 minutes and then when I finally talk to someone they transfer me to a voicemail. Please help!

When they asked for my tax forms a couple years ago (due to a significant drop in reported income, just wanted verification), I had printed off the entire tax return off TurboTax and then they only needed like the first 3-4 pages.

If you hadn’t faxed over all of the pages necessary (honestly, I couldn’t tell you which ones they needed), then that could be why.

At this point though, you need to be patient, and stay on the phone. If they transfer you to a voicemail, call right back. This is important as the process you are going through is for your financial aid to help pay for your expenses at FSU. Without this, you’d be paying thousands out of pocket. It’s well worth a couple hours of problems in the end, is it not?

It definitely is. But I think they need to have more staff or at least people who will respond to my calls or even e-mail. I’ll keep trying I guess…

The most common reason forms are rejected is lack of proper signatures. Did your parent sign the tax return? If not, it will be returned for a signature. The worksheet may be missing your or your parent’s signature … or perhaps some areas on the sheet were left blank (on that sheet, if it’s 0, you have to write 0 on the blank).

Another possibility is that your parent filed head of household when he/she should not have done so. There are a number of parents who think this is a good idea … but aid offices are not allowed to accept tax returns with an incorrect filing status. If your parents are married & filed jointly, this is not your issue.

I just saw this: What makes me a little anxious is that I haven’t even been accepted yet but they are asking for these papers.

Did you complete a 2011-12 FAFSA & send it to the school? If so, you have been selected for verification & they will request the documents even if you haven’t been accepted yet. Financial aid does not consider admission status … if they get a FAFSA that has been selected for verification, they will request the info.

When you file electronically, there is no signature - it’s an electronic signature. However, a real signature is required for financial aid verification (federal regulations). So you have to sign the copies before you submit them.
