I'm planning to begin a new FBLA chapter at my school and I was wondering if there was really a difference between FBLA and DECA. There's already a DECA at my school and I was wondering if the school wouldn't want me starting a new FBLA.

Of course there is. You can go to twice as many competitions. Except DECA is a lot more fun than FBLA, although also a lot more work. My school just had a a unified DECA/FBLA club.

I'm in DECA and next year I'm joining FBLA too. I'm not sure about FBLA exactly, but it just seems like DECA really emphasizes marketing, advertising, sales, etc... whereas FBLA is more the business as a whole.

Who cares? Both of them are overused on college apps.

gouchicago: please explain; how can you overuse competing and placing at the state or national competition? Is your comment a reflection of the number of students who participate or something else?

While I do agree that many, many student participate......

Things like FBLA, NSM won't impress adcoms at top schools. They're way too overused; like Mu Alpha Theta for Asians. Top colleges would like something unique in your EC list too.

It doesn't take a genius to realise that something that is very common on apps and is expected won't move adcoms as much as something off the beaten path.

gouchicago: being a member too common? or making the club too common? There are state and national awards and I doubt those are that common...

we have both DECA and FBLA at our school, minor rivalry between them

DECA is more about marketing/management/ entrepreneurship and most of the competitions include presentations or role-plays

FLBA is more about accounting/legal issues/random things like Parliamentary procedure?? competitions focus on 100 question MC tests

I think having both at your school would be fine, more opportunities to win and get officer positions! Good luck :)

All of the business teachers I have ever had in my high school were constantly begging me to join FBLA, so they could win some competitions. FBLA at my school tends to harass the bright kids to join, but in their efforts, they scare them away. ;)

My ECs really suck though; I probably should have joined.
