I placed 4th in the state competition in NJ for DECA Accounting, but this year my school will be introducing FBLA. Could anyone with experience tell me what the competitions consist of so I know how to prepare?

Thanks

Most of the competitions, including Accounting, consist of a 100 question written test, which you are given 60 minutes to complete. You compete first at your regional conference, where the top five in each event move on, and then you go on to the state conference, where only the top three from each individual event (top 2 from team events) move on to the highest level of competition, the National Leadership Conference. Here’s a link for a good practice test website that uses tests that have actually been used in the past at conferences:

So it’s just a test? No role playing or anything?

Depends on the event, and what level of competition. For example, Marketing is a team event, and at the regional level it’s just a written test taken as a group, however at the state level, it consists of a written test AND the top five team scorers on that have to present based on a case study they give you. Some individual events consist of a presentation or something like that, but they’re in the minority. Check the main FBLA website for more details. Just google “FBLA competitive events,” or something to that effect.

What does FBLA membership give to a school? I’m thinking about starting one at my school but I don’t really see why it helps. The website is pretty vague, too.

It acts like a chapter of any other major high school club organization that you’ve heard of, like Key Club, Science Olympiad, etc. People can join the club, and participate in any events that the individual club decides to hold, as well as any regional, state, or national FBLA events.

Thanks a lot for the website. I’ll surely be using that for both DECA and FBLA.
