Jan 15 deadline

Cross-posted from the Wellesley forum:

I thought that for regular decision, most FAFSA/CSS forms would be due Feb. 1 or at some schools Feb. 15.

I logged in today to start filling out forms, and see that Wellesley's deadline was 2 days ago, January 15th!

1) Are we able to file the forms now, if we pull them together quickly? Or are we completely out of luck?

2) How can they expect the forms to be filled in so soon after Jan 1st? We're an overseas family with a complicated tax filing situation, and our numbers are also changing drastically from 2011 to this year. So it's not a matter of just plugging in last year's numbers for an estimate. (We know we can edit the information later, but want to be as accurate as possible.) We've been collecting the information and doing worksheets up til now, but only logged in today to start filing electronically (we already applied for and received our PINs).

All of the other schools my D applied to have February deadlines, so this has thrown us through a loop. Thanks for any advice - I'm going to keep filling out the form as best we can right now, just in case there's hope for filing today.

Yes, ESTIMATE to get it processed and in the system. When you actually file your taxes then you go back and make corrections.

You should call school ASAP

Double check if they want Profile AND FAFSA. My son had two colleges on his list that required Profile on Jan 15, but the FAFSA isn’t due until Feb. I simply did the absolute best job I could filling out Profile but I know there will be some fluctuation in the numbers since i don’t have any bank statements or W-2s or really ANYTHING yet for the tax year. I used year end statements, went on-line to check balances on money markets, etc., got all our rental property stuff together and dug in. At least now, the taxes will be super easy.

Also I agree, call the colleges right away and ask them for as short of an extension as you need.
