Can any parents or Students help provide me with a realistic view of Fed Work Study.
I'm sure this varies from school to school but in general.

If a student is awarded federal Work study of lets say $2100, Can the student count to finding a Job through the university and if so would this figure be realistic? Something like 233 a month for 9 months?

I liked the suggestions I read where the work study money is best counted on as student spending money, but i'd like to know if I can somewhat count on her getting this money or I need to have a back up plan. Same if we decide it will go to the tuition bill.

Well it would vary from school to school, and from job to job.

My daughter had WS 2 years. The first year she asked for half to be converted to a subsidized loan as she was not sure she would use the WS at all (she had an outside job related to her then future career plans, which actually led to her changing her future career plans). She did end up taking a work study job later in the year but it was very undependable as it was for a prof’s research and their ended up being all sorts of delays in approval of the research.

The next year she got $3400 in WS and earned the full amount working 12 hours a week in a lab. The pay for this particular job was higher than most of the WS jobs on her campus.

I have heard reports on CC of kids having problems getting WS jobs.

It is difficult for it to go to the tuition bill as it is paid as a paycheck based on hours worked and $ per hour. My daughter was paid every 2 weeks. It was her money for personal expenses.

Yes, I’m sure it varies by school and therefore is a good question to ask the school’s Financial Aid office. I know some schools offer far more WS awards than there are WS hours available.

Great this is the feed back I’m looking for.

I’m glad you mentioned to ask the fin aid office because we are visiting next week.

More 1st hand accounts are welcome!

Many schools say that they cannot guarantee that the a w/s student will be able to find a campus job. You need to talk to the school.
