Try as I might I don't understand it, even a year later.

D is a rising sophomore. For the school year 2006/2007 her "work study" portion of FA was $1800. However she goes to a small LAC and was barely able to earn $85 per month doing mandatory food service, not a problem (she liked the job). But in order to qualify for additional on-campus jobs, must work a MINimum of 2 shifts a week in food service; was never able to pull that off even trying to pick-up extra shifts. No off-campus work due to rural area.

Here's the question, with less than half of her work study earned during the last school year, does ANY of the salary she'll earn this summer (camp counselor) count towards that $1800 figure?

Any help is good help.

You can get summer work study if you are going to school during the summer and you are eligible. It would have to be a 'work study' job - some community service jobs like YMCA and tuoring are offered as WS by my Ds school. But if she is not going to summer school then no - it will be regular income.

That's a shame. I wonder why the school would claim $1800 is WS, but never have enought work to nearly cover that. Oh well. Thanks for the clarification.

I know what you mean. My D has $3400 WS in her finaid package and it is very unlikely she will be able to earn it all as the wages are close to min wage and that would be too many hours - especially in her freshman year when she is finding her feet. I am really hoping a couple of small scholarships she just received can be used to reduce WS rather than her loans. I guess by giving the WS they have technically met the need. Don't get me wrong - I wanted her to have the WS options - but I was expecting more like $2500 which she could probably have actually earned at her school.
