Suppose you get a 5 on an AP English test, but bomb the FEE. Do you still get the exemption, or does the FEE trump all?

Additionally, for both sessions of the FEE I will be traveling (pilgrimage & NASA research contest); is it possible to take one of the FEE sessions a few days early?

A score of 5 on either the Language and Composition or Literature and Composition test is considered equivalent to passing the Freshman Essay Evaluation (FEE).

If you get a 5 on an AP English test, you don't have to take the FEE at all. My son got his AP scores last year with sufficient time to still register for the 2nd FEE, so he could have taken that one if he'd needed to. (I don't think you can take the FEE early, but you should contact the ARC after you get your Next Big Mailing and ask.)

There's also the option to take the test on paper during orientation, so you don't have to take the online version during the summer if you're traveling.

If you're willing to bet you got a 5, I wouldn't take the test. Just wait and see what your scores are, and if you got a 4 you can take the paper test during orientation.

Thanks for the advice. A clarifying point: I haven't gotten my AP English score yet, so I'm trying to find a minimum-energy path around all this. I can't do the second FEE as I will be in the Himalayas at the time, so that isn't an issue, and at the same time I really dislike paper testing (long argument), so I was wondering if I could perhaps give the first one early some how, and then take the better of whichever results I got.

Contact the ARC and see if there's anything they can do to arrange the first one early for you. My guess is they will not do that, but it can't hurt to ask.

I'm also guessing that doing it early won't be an option. The questions on the first and second FEE are different, presumably because of security concerns. Letting people take it early would mean they would have to come up with a different test for those people, or raise the same security concerns. They aren't likely to be sympathetic to someone who simply "dislikes" paper tests, although if you have some sort of learning disability you might be able to negotiate some sort of accomodations when you take the exam at Orientation.

I haven't been able to find an answer to this, so I'm posting it here:

I already took English Language AP last year and got a 5. Should I ask College Board to send in a current AP report to MIT now? Or will the usually report after this year's AP exam grades are out be in time for class registration? (I've already indicated MIT as the college to receive my report on this year's AP forms)

Yes, the report after this year's AP tests will arrive in plenty of time for registration -- freshmen don't register until about the week before classes begin. :)
