MIT says that everyone has to take two humanities-ish classes. If you have a 5 on AP English or pass some other qualifying test, you can have one writing and another whatever you want (like history or whatever, which I would do) but if you don't have a 5, you have to take both writing. Is it worth it to take both english tests just for this flexibility? You could always pass the other qualfying test (the FEE), but who knows, that may be really hard. I wouldn't be taking either test if I don't take both for this sole reason.

it doesn't matter either way. the FEE is usually pretty easy, though they upped the standards a bit for my year which is this year, but even if you don't pass that just means one of your hass classes have to be a writing class. some of the writing classes are actually very good, my friend considers it his favorite class.

Really? In that case, does this seem like too much trouble? Oh yeah, actually I have to take one at least since my school requires it. Which one?

Well, to place out of the FEE you only need to get a 5 on ONE english AP, not both. You know that, right?

Yeah, but I'm horrible at english. The more AP English's I take, the higher chances for a 5 :)

That's what I'm asking: is that excessive? Would it be enough to just take one and hope, since the alternative (i.e., failing) isn't really that bad?

I don't really think it's worth it to take two AP English tests, if only for the pain and suffering involved. :) The AP English test is so much writing! Not fun, as I recall.

I think it's really nice to get a 5 and not have to take the FEE, because the FEE is due during the summer, and odds are that you won't want to take a stupid writing test during your summer. Plus, like pebbles said, the graders can be a little capricious.

Not getting a 5 on the AP test and failing the FEE isn't a terrible thing -- the writing classes offered are pretty easy. But taking a writing class isn't something everybody wants to do (I took 8 HASS classes that I really wanted to take, and would have been annoyed if I had to take a stupid writing class and had to bump something cool from my life).

So I think it's good to get a 5 on AP English and avoid the writing class, but the writing class isn't terrible enough to justify taking two AP English tests. Unless you're psyched.

Is it possible to take the FEE at CPW and get your results? I really don't want to take the AP English exams if I can justify myself a way out of it.

Unfortunately, no.

The FEE is offered online in June and (I think) July. It's also offered in written form during Orientation, which is a pain because you'll want to be having fun and playing with new friends and not taking the FEE.

So you can either not take the FEE and assume you'll get a 5 on AP English, or take the FEE anyway. You won't know your AP score before the FEE is offered online.

(I personally took the gambling route. Luckily, I got a 5 on AP Lit!)

Actually, my son learned his AP English results just in time to not have to take the second FEE last summer, so it is possible. No guarantees, but possible.
