Feedback/Help on Academic Dismissal Appeal Letter

You need to talk to your doctor directly.(Under HIPPA, I’m not sure how your mom can even discuss this with your doctor without your written consent.) The “printed note” is a prescription. You can take that to any pharmacy, including one where you are in school. And once that prescription is on file, you can call the pharmacy and ask them to transfer it to any pharmacy of your choosing if there are refills. This is the law. If you are over 18, you can do this for yourself. If your prescription has no refills (narcotics are often in this category), you can take it from your doctor to the pharmacy nearest your school. You need to take charge of your own medication if you want to stay in college.

One of mine had a reduced course load due to a “disability” and financial aid covered the extra time, so it is not necessarily more expensive. One class less, made so much difference.

Your doctor can call in a prescription. There is no need for a physical piece of paper.

Are there meds for ADHD that are not controlled substances? My 75 year old husband can only get a 30 day prescription with no refills and the physical paper must be mailed to him to carry to the pharmacy. It most definitely cannot be called in by the doctor. If there is a way around this, it sure would be nice to know.

The letter seems well thought out, hope he gets back in!

Ugh, I told him to check yesterday but I think he got sidetracked with his mom ordering him around to do things and he forgot  We have a new version of the letter edited to add some other information in (mostly clarification about the meds and him going to seek accommodations), when he wakes up I’ll get him to post it and also respond to you all as this is getting too technical for me to telephone =w=. Thank you for all the help though, honestly we’d be so lost right now without it :3

If his mom is “ordering him around to do things,” to the point where he cannot remember important things, neither he nor his mother is ready for him to be in college. It might be better for him to take some time off, get a job and mature a bit, then reapply.

-removng the specifics of the home life lol- I’m honestly not gonna kill him over forgetting a “oh BTW check the forum” text from me after several hours of that chaos, especially since I went on to discuss other things right afterwards so the message probably got lost.

(basically it was also probably kinda my fault)

Hi everyone, I’ve finally got my account set up. Time to make some clarifications and responses, evidently.

  1. @Massmomm I wouldn’t exactly phrase it as my mom ordering me around until I forgot important things. I admit I did get side tracked helping my mom around the house but the specifics of my home life aren’t an issue here.

  2. it’s true that my medication is a controlled substance so getting a doctor to call in the prescription wont happen but I’ll look closer into getting my prescriptions transferred.

  3. @N’s Mom that sounds like exactly what I need. I’ll talk to my advisor and the people from special accommodations about that. The extra slack would be a Godsend.

So currently he’s rewriting the letter. The dismissal letter he received seemed to emphasise the “what are you gonna do differently” part of it more than the “what happened” part, so he’s going to change it to emphasize that more.

Question, however. We’re wondering if for proof of his condition a picture of his med bottle would be enough, or if we should go all out and get a statement from the doc, what do you guys think?

Contact the doctor.

Wait clarification: its a copy of the prescription, its just on the bottle. So basically if a copy of the prescription would be enough.

That seems like a wierd thing to include. He isn’t going to get accommodations going forward with that, a report outlining his test results would need to be provided to the disabilities office and they would decide if he gets accommodations or not. I don’t think you should include the photo.

Well the thing is his doctor is out until dangerously near the deadline, so we don’t know if we’ll be able to get a note from her and we don’t know what else to send in.

I think he should be able to just state that he has gotten a formal ADHD diagnosis, started on medications, and intends to provide documentation to the disabilities office next semester to request accommodations. No photo or even specific medication name is necessary.
