I’m a freshman looking to see if I can prep early for any Governer’s schools over the summer before trying to get a spot. I’, a little conflicted with my options though.
My two choices would be:
Agricultural Science at Virginia Tech. I actually live really close to the area, so it would be more convenient for me if I went there, however, I’m not sure if I want to go there. When I was younger (elementary school), I really liked environmental science and wanted to go into the field. However, due to a lack of interest by my peers and family, I eventually abandoned it, thinking I might have a better chance elsewhere. Now, though, I find myself picking up the interest again after a few years of cursory awareness of the latest events, but I don’t know if it’ll just be another phase.
The other would be the Humanities at Radford. I will almost definitely go into a humanity if I don’t go into a science, since I have found to be horrible at engineering and dislike math. The courses seem interesting, and I would really like to go, however there is the conflict with the one at Tech.
Another few things are that a few kids at my school go every year, but it’s kind of a relaxed thing. I have no idea if I’ll be recommended since plenty at my school are stronger than me in both areas. Could anyone tell me if these two programs in particular are very competitive? Is the application process complicated or time consuming? Can you flat out ask to be nominated if your school doesn’t emphasize it much? What about the program itself? The course descriptions make the program sound really interesting, but would anyone who’s been through it say that it’s worth it? Also, I was told it was only for Juniors and Seniors. Is this true, because I read on a website it was for all uprising high schoolers, and can you attend two different Governer Schools the same/different year?
