I did buy the nude fishnet and they ran after just 3 wearings. They were nice, but honestly they pretty much looked the same.
I don’t know where you all live, but in the winter I would never go out in a dress without hose. In the professional circles that I travel in, hose never went out of style. Awhile back several women professional friends and I were talking about how we all had heard this rumor than hose was out of style, but all the women in the room were wearing them. Even my very fashionable 17 year old daughter has a couple pairs for when the weather is just too cold. I’m glad I live where people are still sensible.
It’s considered tacky to wear stockings? I’m not going to ruin a pair of beautiful leather shoes just because somebody else thinks I should leave my stockings at home. Judging other women about something so personal sounds like junior high school. I’d wear nude stockings to work and not give it another thought.
I think @SouthFloridaMom9 meant nude hose, not just hose.
I’m still trying to understand why nude hose is tacky or out of fashion…
Conmama, what brand of fishnets did you buy? Because mine has been through a dozen of washes already and still looks like I just pulled it out of the box. It was a $5 find at Nordstrom Rack - their house brand.
One possible option is patterned hose or tights. Some are super cute. My kid has a pair with cat faces on the knees - when worn with boots, they look like cats peeking out of boot shafts. Of course, I would not recommend this to a middle-aged woman in a business suit, but there are other hose patterns that can be worn with office-appropriate attire.
I bought one at Nordstrom and one somewhere else. One ran and the other got a hole in the crotch area that got bigger and bigger…LOL.
I wear footless tights with flats.
Yes, nude hose are considered out of style, matronly, and tacky. In NYC and environs. Even in the winter. In dead winter, tights or pants are the norm. This time of year—too warm for tights, too cold for bare legs—patterned hose (mentioned upthread) or a very light, somewhat opaque eggshell color are common. As soon as it hits about 78 degrees, bare legs.
I finally broke down and bought the nude fishnets…love them, love them. In spring it can be 30 degrees in the AM and 70 degrees going home and bare legs just don’t work. I’ll probably stick with the nude fishnets as long as I can!

Wall Street Journal:
"Is It OK to Wear Nude Hose Again?
After many years in fashion’s backwaters, nude hose are making a comeback "
Ok…my take away from this article is-- it was out, it’s coming back in but stick with sheer nude…
Kate Middleton wears nude hose. If she does it, it’s okay for the rest of us. She’s young, with great legs and is generally regarded as a style maker. Even without her approval of the things, I’d still wear them when necessary.
It’s cold here in NE for 9 months of the year, so I wear tights and sheer hose much of the year because it’s better than freezing. In the warmer months, I go bare-legged even with formal attire.
For fair women over 50, those self tanners really highlight the sun damage. The last time I tried one, my legs were so blotchy I looked like a leopard. I’d rather get a little actual sun or just go pasty.
OK, here’s where I think the confusion is. If you’re talking nude-colored hose the consistency of tights, then I think most of us would agree that’s out, been out, never in. Those sag and look like compression stockings. Not good ever. I was only thinking of sheer nude hose, the kind you can’t really see but that make your legs look natural and minimize the imperfections underneath. If those were ever out, then I scratch my head.
^^Me too, I meant sheer nude hose (thanks @ChoatieMom).
I’m glad we have an authoritative source like the WSJ validating our come-back wish
Unfortunately I don’t make the rules in south Florida . . . where there very few fashion rules but that is definitely one of them (i.e., never wear them!).
Kate Middleton wears them because that’s Royal protocol, not because it’s necessarily stylish. But, depends on your climate. What they do in South Florida is irrelevant for how stupid it would be in the north with freezing temperature and snow on the ground to have bare legs.
Royal protocol… Hmmm… Can we find any photos of what color and how thick the queen’s hosiery is?
I don’t think SFM’s comment was making any judgment on leg coverage outside her state, just that Floridians don’t wear them. In my state, no one wears hose. I haven’t worn them even once in over a decade – no judgment on anyone else.
Dermablend body makeup covers everything and is a good alternative to self-tanning for hose-less legs.
Yes, that is where I was confused and why I quoted the article making the distinction between heavy and sheer.
