Fell in Love with Baltimore, but I'm Hating My School

Hi,

I'm a sophomore at a very small liberal-arts college right outside of Baltimore City, MD and I'm ready to transfer out. The only reason why I decided to attend my current college was because they were quite generous with financial aid which was important to me and my family. I've made some really great friends at my college and I have fell in love with Baltimore. But, the school just isn't for me. I went to a very small private high school and I thought that continuing my education at a very small college would be good but it hasn't. I've switched my major because I've had issues connecting with professors in my department and the decisions that the administration is making is something that I don't want to be apart of. I have thought about transferring since I got there but I wanted to give it a try, but considering that I have $10K in student loans so far and my family has to make payments that are a bit excessive are making me reconsider where I finish my undergrad. I've visited friends at different schools on the East Coast and I could see myself where they are. I would like to stay in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic but I would be open to heading out west to Chicago as well. I've listed my stats and my list below, can you all give me some advise and let me know if I'm heading in the right direction.

Stats:
-2.45 GPA at college (it was a 3.0 but it has been a rough semester, I plan on bringing it back up if I can.)
-2.8 GPA at my high school
-Black Male from CT
-Attended a prep school
-Sociology major with a double minor in History and Social and Political Thought
-Vice President of BSU at my college
-ACT: 26

List of Possible Schools:
-Temple University (my 1st choice)
-Suffolk University
-Virginia Commonwealth University
-Seton Hall University (I got in when I applied back in HS)
-George Mason University
-UNC-Charlotte

I'm open to any suggestions/advice that anyone here can provide.

Thanks!

big vote for Temple!
philly is a great city and Temple is a thriving urban campus with everything a college student would like. Temple will be the experience you are looking for. I also like VCU for #2.

The only school on your list that I am familiar with is Temple. If you are really interested in going to Temple I think it may be in your best interest to stay at your current school and try to pull your GPA up a bit. I know that Temple does ask for your high school transcripts in addition to your college transcripts. Since you can’t change what happened in high school you really want to look outstanding for college. Also if you have at least 15 college credits Temple generally doesn’t ask for SAT/ACT scores.

One of my really good friends goes to Temple and I’ve been up there a few times for a weekend this semester. I really do like the school, the location is exactly what I am looking for (in the middle of the city), the size is desirable as well. I was thinking about VCU as well, I’ve been to Richmond once and I really liked what I saw.

I have 38.5 credits so far (as of this Fall semester). Should I send my test scores anyway since they weren’t so bad?

I’m not sure what their policy is on that, but even if you did send them the university may not look at them if they didn’t request them.

Out of curiosity, is the school you’re referring to Goucher?

Yeah, it is.

I wouldn’t mind staying in Baltimore. Should I consider Morgan State or Towson?

DO NOT GO TO MORGAN. no seriously dont.

Happykid is at Towson, and loves it. Can your family afford the OOS cost? Towson has limited on campus housing. You will probably have to live off campus.

Pay a visit to Morgan State and see what you think. You might like it. Just take the Collegetown Shuttle.

Wishing you all the best!
