All my friends are British and they really don’t give a crap…

…most sensible Britons aren’t monarchists necessarily. I find the educated ones are just too indifferent to have any stance on it XD

For some reason, I feel like more Americans care about this wedding than many Britons.

I care.

Yeah right.

This.

I saw a Newsweek article that summed the situation up aptly.
“Time for a cute royal Wedding,
while England burns”

The wedding is England’s last pathetic attempt to be relevant
because they haven’t mattered for the last 100 years.
I simply think caring about the British is outdated. I’d rather watch China, India, Nigeria,Pakistan,or Egypt.
now, those countries are going to be the face of the future.
England is a backwater.

That said, I may skip school on Friday.

(it’s my birthday:))

the who and what?

On Jimmy Fallon last night, Matt Lauer was on, and he had this huge 4-5" stack of papers and things. He said it was everything you needed to know about the wedding, including entire chapters just based on singular guests.

Then Jimmy pulled out a thin manila folder, and Lauer said (joked - I hope) that was everything they were supposed to know about the turmoil in the Middle East.

I think this sums up our problems quite nicely.

The UK is still very relevant. They still have a massive amount of “colonies”, and have a large impact on the world economy. Not to mention they are America’s closest ally.

And the royal family aren’t really English. More like German and Welsh.

German, Greek and Danish, Plus Welsh, Scottish and Russian. Even a bit of American from The Queen Mother. Victoria and Albert bred like rabbits and married their kids into a whole range of European Royal houses. That’s why the British Royal Family’s lineage is very versatile. The House of Windsor was actually the House of Saxe Coburg Gotha (Albert II’s) until the name was changed during WWII because of high anti-German sentiment.

I didn’t even know there was a wedding until I caught a couple seconds of some DJ mentioning it on the radio the other day. So no, I really have no interest in such matters.

^I’m surprised there’s no Spanish or French. I guess the British royal family aren’t over the the Spanish attack and the 100 years war.

It was actually changed to Windsor in 1917, during WWI. The Royal Family has been mostly German since the death of Queen Anne in 1714. Not really Welsh…

The French royal family kind of died out, you may recall, in a somewhat historically notable fashion. Spain also stopped being an important European power many centuries ago.

I think they got that from “Prince of Wales,” which is just a title.

This made me laugh. Vive la r

Nah, who cares about the monarchy.

To our friends in the UK: why does the British care? What power do this family have?

Why even allow a monarchy to exist? They are so 1700s.

And the House of Lords. Why should your upper house of parliament be full of hereditary “lords”? The upstart “commons” still a little too unreliable to be the senior house?

And get a damn constitution.

As already discussed, most don’t. A lot of people do have a certain respect for the Queen, but when she dies I think the monarchy question will become far more mainstream than it is now.

It isn’t full of hereditary peers anymore; I think there are about 90 left (though their days are numbered). Most of the people in the Lords are selected by politicians for their expertise in whatever field so they can debate and scrutinise bills before they become law.

We have one, it’s just unwritten.

The French Royal family is the Spanish royal family that descended from King Luis. They died out in France.

So the French royal family (House of Bourbon) is the Spanish and Luxemburg family.

[Looks like a great system.](<a href=“House of Lords - Wikipedia”>House of Lords - Wikipedia)

That is the stupidest thing I’ve read today.

Has no one noticed Japan is the only empire left in the world?

No, Billy, they really do have a constitution that’s not written down…

(Assuming this is the UK we’re talking about; I didn’t read the whole thread.)

I was okay with the Royal Wedding until I found out that David Beckham was invited!!! My soccer coach bought tickets for all of us seniors for a game on Sunday that we thought Beckham would be playing in…bummer :(
